There is no greater solitude than that of the Tracker in the forest, unless perhaps it's that of the wolf in the wilderness.
you know people got alot of shows they like to watch that others don't like. So thanks for all the snide comments.

I think the #1 rule of survival is to use common sense. Anyone with common sense will know not to do some of the things Bare does. Anyone without common sense would die anyway, even with good training, so...
I watch his show, and like it, but am looking forward to another show that hopefully will provide a more common sense approach to survival.
i wouldn't mind the show if they dropped the survival pretense and just called it 'what will bear do next?'

i keep waiting for hit to start doing specials, like Stroud has.
he could do one called 'Man vs. Falls from 60 feet', and 'Bear vs Grylls', where he takes on a grizzly with a SOG knife lashed to a stick.

Hey Redwoodfox - you like the show. So what? Some others don't like it. So what? Others still could care less about it. Maybe try chilling out just a tad. Go for a hike or something, it's soothing for the soul.

Just to clear up a point, he was NOT and never has been a member of the Special Air Service. He "trained" with them. This is probably a euphamism for applied to join, and failed the training. I will accept he climbed Everest. Other than that, as a proud and patriotic Englishwoman I completely disassociate myself from him.

I am certainly a fan of Bear, and have to say that my first thought is that a forum dedicated to survivalists would have at least some remote appreciation for many of the valuable skills that ARE offered on Man vs. Wild.
Sure some of the situations are far fetched, not the best choice, and do not offer the most common sense approach. However, Bear often even states himself that he is only making what many of you are calling "poor decisions" in order to demonstrate some techniques to finding your way out of the particular situation. SURE he could have walked around the water the long way, but what does that demonstrate to the viewer? What if there is NO WAY to walk around the easy way? That is what he is trying to demonstrate. Anybody here that has ever been in a true life survival situation should certainly be able to understand that conditions do not always provide for "an easier way." If the situation were more simple to get out of then obviously one would expect to utilize common sense. Walking around the difficult situation would not offer much value to the viewer in terms of REAL technique or survivalist skill.
And honestly, who really cares if he were wearing an under shirt life jacket in the rapids? He was still demonstrating a technique that could help get you out of the potentially life threatening situation alive. Why should he have to put his life 100% in the hands of nature to demonstrate something that is actually useful? 90% risk is truly not enough to satisfy you?
The reality of Bear is that he likely does not have all the knowledge he has demonstrated on his show at the top of his head. Certainly he and his crew consult with locals, experts on various related subjects, and true life survivalists about the dangers and techniques of survival in a specific area before putting together an episode.
If there were no support crew whatsoever involved, does anyone here TRULY think they could go head to head with Bear and make it out of any 1 of the situations he has demonstrated alive? I bet there are very, VERY few if any at all here. The first time most of you faced dehydration and had to find water in a camel's stomach or were about to starve and faced with having to eat some giant spider or drink a yak's blood to keep energized I bet most would just give up and die... And that's IF you even knew how you could possibly survive in the given situation.
Most of you may not like Bear or his show but at least show the man the respect he has earned, and do not disregard the many useful tips he has provided for the general public. Most of you probably wouldn't last a day, even WITH the support crew.
I'm anxious to hear anyone's responses.... MY FLAME SUIT IS ON.
i saw an episode the other day where he went deep in a cave for no reason with just a torch for lighting and it went out and he was in pitch black. then came a commercial and when it was over he was out. i learned that commercials are essential for emergency planning.
Come share my fire.
I agree with the anti-Bear comments and include more: Winnie, his show says he's British Special Forces. There is only one "Special Forces" and sometimes they were Green Berets (when they can't find another hat). Also, in one of his shows, he walked into a mangrove swamp. Yeh, it might have been a training point when he turned back, but a simple "That's a mangrove swamp don't go in there" would have sufficed. Oh yeah, personal experience and a very good life lesson!
Note: I may be a little over-sensitive about anything that smacks of SF wannabes.

I gave my response up above Scorpion. My concern is that folks who have no skill, training or experience will not know any better and think they can jump into a river and be saved or any of the other goofy things he demonstrates. He does idiotic stunts that no one in their right mind would do if they were in that situation. It's pure entertainment and from that perspective he's dangerous.
