i have added to my kit two pieces of canvas for this with some leather lases i can make some in about 10mins. after finding and cutting the branches.i put eyelet all around the canvas to put the lases trough .i make what looks like a bear paw snowshoe.

Just curious as to how they attatch on. I just made up a pair out of ply wood and would like to try them out. They're heavy but I think they'll work. Are they solidly attatched at the heel too or can you move in them a bit?

They are not solidly attached at the heel, just at the toe. Don't forget to put a "toe hole" in your ply wood snowshoes.

For bindings - best to know how to make a squaw hitch or trappers hitch. Then you can use any rope or cord (lamp wicking is best, but hard to get in the US in the length you need - have to go to Canada).

This site shows a very interesting way of making "pioneer snowshoes" that I would probably use for making primitive snowshoes after looking at the site.

There is also a section on winter mocs that talks about making a winter moc from a moose shank. This was the type of winter moc my grandfather and g-grandfather used for cold weather. They would cut off the leg hide in a tube, scrape and work the hide, sew off the toe (your heel goes at the hock), turn down the fur at top, and wear the moc with the fur inside and the flesh side out. A lace attached to the heel was used for wrapping and tieing the moc in place. Made a nice knee high moc. As the rawhide was only worked, not curred or tanned, these mocs were only used for cold weather.

attach the toe only the strap goes around the back of the heel so you can lift your heel normal.
