Thread: Holy Grail Knife

    Default Holy Grail Knife

I'm looking for a very specific item and figured I would go to some experts for help. I've been heavily involved in the scouting program for years. Two sons in the program and my oldest just received his Eagle rank.

I have kind of camping equipment fetish - just can't get enough of the stuff. But the one item I have never found is a good combination L.E.D. knife. Many knives sport a working LED flashlight but they are generally for reading maps or other low light activities. In other words, the lights are very wimpy or are just added on as novelty items.

I've tried most of the Gerber multi-tools, CRKT guppie, Buck lumina and others, Tool Logic, etc., etc. All very disappointing.........

Any of you ever come across a really good knife/LED combo? Any help would be much appreciated!!!

Well you've got a couple of choices.

Buy a really good knife and a really good led light

    or

    Buy a P.O.C knife/LED combo
    1. If it's in your kit and you don't know how to use it....It's useless.
    2. If you can't reach your kit when you need it....Its useless.

I never really looked for both a light and a cutting edge together and do not plan to.

You have basically answered your own question with the models you've mentioned. For whatever reason, the two really don't mate well with each other (as far as quality is concerned).

A sturdy folder (Spyderco or Benchmade) in one pocket; a quality light (Inova/Surefire) in the other has worked best for me.

I have never seen a good quality knife/LED combo. Why the combo? (Believe me, I understand "because I want one") If you can't find one that suits your fancy, how about a good quality knife and a photon LED that you can attach to it? These are pretty good lights. http://safezonellc.com/lighting.html How about heading over to the Introduction section and tell us a bit about yourself. Thanks.

    Thanks Gents!

    klkak - may I be ignorant? What's a P.O.C. knife?

crashdive123 - trying to minimize... got this idea in my head and I can't shake it. If I can't find one, I'll have one made. An old boss of mine (now old friend) has made knives for years. P.S. added an into....

Abbreviation for piece of c**p. As far as a knife with a light, I've always been kind of partial to this one.

I question the wisdom of putting a knife and light together. I'd suggest that you stick with separate items - and buy quality for both.

I guess if you are thinking of using this in the case of true emergencies, the small footprint/compact size might be useful. But you can already buy such small LED lights, I am not sure the space savings is worth it.

For me, it would also be a safety issue. If I needed to perform some camp chores at night I think is would be safer to use a good quality knife while wearing a small LED headlamp.

Find a knife that works for you then invest in a good light. Have you thought about a head lamp? I have an Inova 24-7, it is a multi use light as it has 7 modes of operation and a multitude of ways you can carry or attach it. give it a look see.

+1 for the head lamp. They are very useful, and are uaually lighting up what you are looking at. obviously the main advantage of them is that you can use both hands to work and still have light wear you want it.

    Cool Well,since you asked....

I own a Buck Lumina only because I liked the "strobe" idea on the light. I use a Petzl Tikka XP headlamp for just about everything one might use a flashlight for. Sometimes you can get things to do double-duty & sometimes you can't. I haven't seen anything yet that I'd pay good money for in that department.
