Did several patrols out of Guam. Never saw any giant crabs. Lot's of Stone Fish though. Most of my free time was spent diving or boonie stomping.

I took leave once and went to Guam to visit a friend. We went to his father-in-laws farm. One night we was sitting around a bonfire enjoying the night when I felt something touch my back. I turned and looked behind me and almost crapped my shorts when I saw a crab as big around as a car tire. My friends mother-in-law said it was a pet. I did not sleep that night. The next day I couldn't get back to billeting on base fast enough.

Yep, thats the monster I saw on Guam. The one I saw was a different color but about the same size.

With most locals you just have to gain their trust, but then there are the others.

Like I said, it has been quite a few years since I've been there. As backtobasics said, gaining their trust is big. As with visiting any new culture this is an important part of "surviving". Many of the locals view Haoles (whites) with a bit of distrust, but do realize that the tourist industry is one of the main businesses. While English is the language, locals have developed their own sort of language (Pidgeon English). The drug culture (and protection) was very big, especially in the more remote areas. Again this was quite a while ago and things may have changed a lot. I never once had any issues with any locals while living there. I knew many that did. I think the big difference was that I worked to fit into their culture, and did not expect them to fit into mine. Enjoy your trip. It truely is a beautiful place. .....and remember - pictures - we need pictures.

I saw a special on tsunami's some time back that said Hawaii is expected to generate one of the largerst tsunamis. Some mountain is separating and sliding off into the Pacific Ocean. If I recall correctly, it's only a matter of time before it does unleashing a tsunami headed for the West Coast.

While there is a lot of volcanic activity in the islands that could generate a tsunami, I'll bet that the threat of a tsunami hittining the Hawaiian Islands is probably even higher. Afterall, they're smack dab in the middle of the "Ring of Fire".

    Exactly my point crash.
I really do think it is worthy of further thought.
Global warming or whatever is making our weather more and more extreme. If what they say about Nabiru, Nubira, Planet x is correct then it will only get worse and if you mean to survive then these will be huge factors to contend with.
Being directly on the ring of fire must surely up the chances of volcanic activity somewhat?

While I'm probably not the one to discuss global warming (I do not believe in manmade global warming, but that's another discussion).....the Hawaiian Islands were born out of volcanic activity. While the Big Island (Hawaii) has active volcanoes, I don't think the others do at this time. That's not to say they can't or won't. I'm not sure what your Nubira, Planet x reference is about (remember, sometimes I catch on, but slow sometimes)

Yawn - I remember some parts of the '60s. I think I was in a purple haze when someone mentioned planet X. It's all so confusing now. But the best I remember is has to do with a NASA cover up about a planet that will pass close to us. Populated by a race of reptiles (or did I dream that? Never mind. Makes a good story). It takes us right back to that monster thread that never seems to die about 2012 when the Presidential race that year will cause the end of humanity as we know it.

Somewhere on planet X a lonely reptile is typing on his computer about a mysterious planet Earth that their government is covering up.

2012 is the end I tell you!! It's when all the sewers on earth back up at once!

Just wondering, can you buy shotgun shells loaded with blue ointment? If not how do you kill those things?

Regardless of whether a rock of any size with or without reptile pilots will pass close to us or not........LOL.
When a volcano goes bang it puts lots of stuff up in the air. That stuff lands on the ground and covers everything. It makes things hard to keep alive. It makes water undrinkable.
It also spewes hot lava about which I heard is not very nice.
In terms of thinking about ones survival....I think it's probably worth considering.
The volcano wouldn't, I imagine, need to be right next door to you.
Remember Mt. St Helens and the amount of cr+p it threw up. That cloud traveled the world in the jet stream and affected all weather systems.
So yeah, I'd probably put a wee bit more thought into it, if it was me.
