Hawaii in a eotwawki scenario

What do you think it would be like on the island of kauaii to be spacific if things got wors or when were in another great depression? Ive never been to any of the islands befor but from research I know Kauai is one of the more wild islands with lots of deep natural forest. I am asking becuase I am going and Im not sure how long Im staying and this was a thought of mine when considering to go though its not the reason im going. My first reaction was to think being traped on a island especeally one thats populated, well known, small, and one thats the most isolated land masses in the world in a eotwawki scenario or a great depression scenario was stupid "who would do that?" I thought. But then I remembered somthing volwest/remy was talking abbout how many people often have the same plans and ideas of where to go and what to do when thing go wrong. If everyone went to Alaska or Canada to get away from people that might not be the best idea and I know Ive heard many people on this forum say thats where they plan to go. you migh have more company then you planed on the way there and when you get there. Its completely predictable so if your avoiding the gov that might not be the easyest way. However I never hear enyone say anything about hawaii in thees scenarios dispite its abundance of wild food (feral chicens, goats, hogs, deer and wild fish, seafood, birds, and fruit and other wild edibles), mild climate, fresh water, and even though its not that big it is covered in a lot of forest. Kauai isnt as populated as the other main islands and looks more pristeen then Maui or Oahu. I dont really know if Aalaska would be that bad an idea but there are some things to think about. And I dont really know where the best place would be or what hawaii would be like or what anywhere would be like. I can only try to make some what educated gusses. What do you think?

Two months of winter down, nine months of winter left to go. -3* below just now, yea how bad can it be....? I just don't know how far an Owl can fly non-stop, you might make it. In a SHTF one would want the Big Island full of Prime Beef, as in "The King Ranch".

lol winter up there was 6 months. But yea that sucks. Theres lots of food on Kauai like I said deer, hog, goat, chicken, other birds, fish, fruit, cocnuts, other stuff I dont know about. I wouldnt want or need beef it would be to much work to harvest and it is to much food for 2 people to eat fast enough for it to not rot sicne there is no winter to freez it and though I could smoke it it would be a lot of unnecessary time and work. It would be dif if I was feeding a tribe but even then it would be unnecessary since the hawaiian tribes thrived without beef.

Owl Girl - I spent a lot of time on Kauai back in the 70's (lived on Oahu). It is IMO the prettiest of the islands in the chain. My roomate was originally from Kauai. Back then, they catered to the tourists pretty well. There was only one traffic light on the island, no buildings over 3 stories..... Now I'm sure that a lot has changed since I was there. One thing that may not have changed - sugar cane was the second largest cash crop. Secong to marijuana. The more remote (and beautiful) parts of the island were well protected be well armed people. Like I said, a lot has probably changed.

One thing to note - if I remember right - Kauai has the heaviest annual rainfall of anywhere in the world. Not the entire island, but one particular mountain - makes for some interesting flash floods.

Several years ago after a bad typhoon hit, the US Navy brought one of their submarines into port and basically ran a realllllllllly big extension cord to power the esential services on the entire island.

Thats really cool crashdive. Do you miss it? If I could Id go to samoa which has very few tourist ant looks so beautiful but I couldnt aford the flight but mabe somday

I loved the time I spent there. I would suggest (as Hope already did) that a visit to the Big Island would be in order. Volcanoes National Park is truely an awesome spectacle.

maybe ill visit the BI some time but for now I wont have the money. Do you know if its cheaper to go from one islant to another by boat or plane?

I know I'll be dating myself with this, but in the 70's it was about $20 or $25 round trip from Oahu to Kauai.

Just checked the Hawaiian Airlines site. Looks like you can do a round trip flight from Oahu to Kauai for about $75. It's about a 20 minute flight. You may be able to get on with a dive or fishing charter to get dropped off. I knew of a few people doing that - kind of worked for their keep - making sure the tourists got bait, etc......but that was quite some time ago.

I lived in Hawaii from 1973 to 1978. My mother was born there and we have lots of family on the big Island. Most all the cane feilds are gone. My mothers uncle has a macadamia nut farm and says that the wild pigs are out of control over there. He has lost whole crops to them. Personally I think Hawaii would be one of the easier places to survive, well for that matter any tropical island with fresh water.

I guess the advantage would be it's isolated and an island. The problem with it would be it's isolated and an island. (shrug)

I like the option of being able to run long distances if things get really bad. Not that I CAN run long distances. I just like the option.

I've been to Hawai'i twice. Once on a ship to the Philippines in 1960 (where I lived 4 years), and once on a plane enroute to the Tonga Islands in 1975 (where I lived 2 years).

In the tropics, the biggest danger is from food FALLING on you ... particularly coconuts. But there are also mangoes to watch out for, maybe guava. (You could also impale yourself on a pineapple, by accident....)

It's a very different life from what we have in the lower 48. It's hard to starve, but the "time on your hands" can get tedious.

One tip: On our trip to Tonga, we flew International, through Fiji and it cost some $4,000. On our return, we flew from Tonga to American Samoa, and THAT made the balance of the return trip a DOMESTIC flight, which cost about 1/2.

Sounds like a good idea Owl Girl, the only thing I would put into the discussion is that if you are thinking about it from a true 'survival - weighing up the pros & cons' point of view then you would have to consider the possibility of being wiped out by volcanic activity and/or Tsunami. Both very real threats to survival.

We would like to go to New Zealand and are having the same quandary.

i never knew me nonanimal food could be such a danger to me lol really though thanks for the heads up. ive heard of coconut being a prob but i dont know much about it, ahhh ill be such a gree horn!!!
