Thread: lawn mowing a security issue?

  1. #1

Default lawn mowing a security issue?

sine my riding mower broke down last year my property looks abandoned . there could be squatters out back and i would'nt know it. so the thought comes to me could this become a security issiue come SHTF. do many of you live in a very rural setting?
i;m on the look out now for a riding mower. mean time i kneed to go round the property with the tractor and find the big stuff buried in the tall grass and the little stuff as well. garden hoses dogfood cans branches big and small ect..........
with all this rain we've had lately the weeds and grass has gone wild. so what say you?

I guess if I was a roving band of marauders looking for an easy score or a place to hide out....and overgrown brush/junky property would seem a good spot to loot or camp out in.....Says "Unoccupied".

But may not be a place like that hold any loot able goods?....or just what has been left behind........as in Bugged out, can't carry all your stuff.

Under normal conditions (may not be a SHTF.....Just a boring Saturday night).......possible party people are always looking for a property to , ah...party at?......so again, says unoccupied/ easy.

I prefer that "natural look" at "The Place".......but do mow quite a bit, and weed whack the areas close around trailers, sheds, wood piles......
This is to help with vining spreading weeds, poison ivy, wild parsnip (poison), small junk trees and brush (box elder and buck thorn), cuts down on bugs of all sorts.....and just tall grass that get you pants wet for the dew in the morning, or after a rain.

I think that high grass and brush would be a fire hazard when real dry.....this may give you a real SHTF, and most friends that have a lot of trees and yards in the woods areas, keep stuff trimmed back for fire and falling branch/storm damage.
Also a consideration on any one or thing "sneaking up on you"......

Mowing trimming says, Yeah, somebody is here, takes care of their stuff and may be a problem to take easily.....but on the other hand says "Maybe good stuff inside"....

City house....neighbors city kind dictate keep the yard under control.......(which I guess doesn't apply to the exhaust wholes that rent next door)

    Hey!

My whole security program revolves around not looking like I have anything worth stealing!

I still have to keep things mowed and trimmed.

The mowing and trimming thing is done for fire protection as well as grooming for view.

Back in the old days before lawn mowers people in the country kept their yards completely stripped of grass as a safety thing. Fire proof, easier to spot snakes. Any grass was pulled up and the bare dirt was kept free of twigs and swept with a broom.

I got behind on cutting my grass and ended up finding a stolen vehicle right up against the house. Have also came out and fussed at people who decided to "relieve" themselves in my driveway. Cut it with whatever you have to show it's not abandoned.

You don't have to wait for SHTF. The cops will be busting down the down thinking it's a drug house. Enjoy the entertainment.

A true SHTF....Asteroid strike, Yellowstone erupting, tornado, epidemic, sun spot caused EMP, nuked, invasion by Cuba (Go Wolverines), Zombies, Meth head, drug syndicates........or even a total economic collapse.....I'm putting keeping my lawn mowed, is not high of list of my "preps".

Everyday life, yeah I keep stuff mowed and trimmed.

well not worried the sheriff my bil and him are childhood friends and fishing buddies. as for the fire control that's realisticly my biggest problem.popping 1,5oo bucks now for a new mower would probably be best. we never painted the house so
even when i mow the place will still have that we be po folks air about it. that could be a good thing in the near future.

Just curious. How many years have you been saying "in the near future"?

BTW, what is the time limit on the "near future".

    Is it inside a year?

    Inside two years?

    How about five years?

And what are we anticipating to happen that makes painting the house and mowing the grass no longer a requirement of normalcy?

Especially that house painting thing. That is truly insightful.

Well Kyrat....have a guy that lives in town....paints one side of his house a year.....then the trim, on year 5......The starts over.

Yeah, HayS, when is this near future?...I'd like to know as well.........maybe go buy a new Corvette, just don't want to have to pay for it for too long.......

Meanwhile I plan on having decent cut grass right up to and during that "big one going up".....so every one will say..."Hey lookie that guy grass...sur..........(nothing)

Long vegetation provides cover and/or food for insects. Insects and vegetation provide cover, food and/or nesting for rodents. Vegetation, insects and rodents provide cover and food for snakes. Vegetation, insects, rodents and snakes provide cover and food for larger animals, including skunks. In my opinion, enough said.
