    Default Fact or Fiction?

The local gun shop I use got in 700 pounds of shotgun powder in January, but typically they only get about 100 lbs/month. More for other loads. The folks there have lots of great advice and assistance for people just getting started.

Also websites like this have some good information:

    http://www.hodgdonreloading.com

The rumors on all the "firearms" forums for the last 2 years has been that one of Hodgdon's primary Shotgun powder suppliers in Australia had a fire at their factory and thus the supply has been very limited for that particular type of powder. This rumor has beed difficult to confirm. But the supply has begun to improve, I am guessing the price will drop as well.

    Kyrat,

I pretty much use red dot and green dot for my shotshells. These have always been semi easy to get. Clays is something I like for pistol, as well as unique and universal. Clays has been hit and miss, universal and unique has been rare although I did score some a few weeks ago.

Last week I bought a Remington 700, so I will be having to work up a load this spring. As far as pistol goes, as long as it shoots the bullet out and cycles the gun, I am happy!

I use Green Dot for 12, 20, and 28 gauges, but it's one of the hardest powders to find in my area. 700X, 800X, and a few other Hodgon powders are available at gun shows, but not much is around at local gun shops. Congratulations on the Remington!

I have no experience with 700x or 800X.

Thanks for the congrats. I have always wanted a Remington 700 in 270 Winchester. LGS had an early 70's ADL for $350 out the door. Couldn't pass it up!

$350 sounds like a good deal! Gun shops near me have some nice rifles that go in and out at some okay prices, but I can't hunt with a rifle in Delaware. The only public ranges I know of near me aren't even 100 yards, and the longest private range I know of is still pretty short. So skeet is the game for me...

I don't use 700X or 800X either, but you can get it, a powder called "PB", and other uncommon powers at gun shows near me. But that's about it in terms of shotgun powder in my area. A gun shop about an hour north of me gets some more common stuff in on occasion, but the owner (a relative of mine knows him) has to drive two hours or more to get it. I haven't seen any powder at any gun shops near me. It's about the same with .22's as well.

This one has some external wear (bluing and scratches on the stock) but internally it is in really nice shape. Story was it belonged to a guy out West who carried it a lot as a bush gun. Guy died, family inherited it, didn't want it, sold it to LGS. No scope, but has a nice set of 1" weaver rings on it that seem to be about the age of the rifle. Over the years I have gone back and forth on .270 or a 7mm of sorts. Can't go wrong either way, apples vs oranges. I know .270 is a very capable round and effective all around and just stuck with it. Can't wait to play!

    Back to OP, whatcha reloading?

    What am I reloading???

This batch of powder is specifically for my pistol shooting and possibly for some 12ga hulls with #4 buck or slugs. It will also allow me to save some of my favored powders for heavy .357 and .44mag loads.

From what I can tell the EPR7 seems to work best in 9mm and 45acp but not so well in the big roomy cases. I think I can make it work in .38spl. You can make about anything work in .38.

It is a very fine flake powder and should meter well through the powder measures. I have not put any to use yet since I still have a couple of buckets of everything on hand.

I am also wanting to wait until I buy a chronograph so I can tell just exactly how the test loads of the new powder compare to my 40 year old Unique recipes. I don't want to load up a bucket of ammo and find it is 100fps below normal velocity. I also need to rebuild my bullet trap out back. The steel plate is still good but time has taken a toll on the wood frame.

I may wait until the weather turns. I am officially freezing my southern butt off at the moment and have not gone farther than the mail box since Thursday. 8-12 inches of snow predicted for tomorrow.

And ditto on the congrats on the new rifle. I have several friends that have taken lots of game with .270 through the years including one bull moose in Alaska and a bull elk here in KY. .270 can be tuned in to be just as accurate as any other caliber even though it does not have the rep some others do.
