    I'll need a boat first.

Yeah, I know, everyone needs at least one boat....first one comes hard...then they get easier.....like most things in life.
At least you got the cameo covered.

Actually my first boat cost me $1. My grandfather was replacing his old jonboat and didn't want to just give me his old one so he asked me how much money I had. When I told him I had a buck he said 'Get in the truck. We're going to the DMV'.

I camo painted a boat last year. It's in the yard some where. I still haven't found it.

My first camo job on a boat was in the late 80's or early 90's we camo-ed a 12' Game Fisher using palm fronds from a cabbage palm and 3 colors of Krylon. Then we did our 16 foot Monarch a year later. We must have gotten that out of our system cause 10 more boats later we never have camo-ed a boat with paint. We have tended towards forest green or marsh beige kinda khaki?

I just bought my first camo gun about a year ago. A Franchi Affinity. I have found that I shoot much better with a camo paint job. LOL

I do like how the camo cases came out. Great job!

I really don't know how much difference a cameo job does as far as concealment, so many patters and styles.....but turkey hunting and good head net and face cover will make you disappear.

Then again, sometimes the intent and enthusiasm outweighs the practicality of the project and one is best served to keep ones mouth shut.....or dire consequences ensue.

"Honey it will be 12 ft in the air.....ah, never mind, it is really a cool paint job....Looking really good......"

The best part....it's just fun, there is no wrong way, and no matter how much or little talent you have....GO FOR IT......

I've been reading some about dying packs to change the color...It seems doable, however painting would be far easier. I just wonder how much stiffer does the paint make you pack? Is there a big difference with regular spray paints and the ones made for fabrics?

Has anyone used RIT dye or other similar fabric/nylon dyes?

I have an older small camelbak that is a little on the bright side for my liking, would like an earth tone color.

(side note, anyone wanting a "boat" I recently made a plywood canoe, its very easy...its completely doable if you have a little time and space.)

I haven't used the Rit to dye nylon, but it works with vinegar added and the bath heated. I don't know which to use, but there are on the market at least a few aerosol spray dyes for synthetic fabrics. They would be nice to try also. My primary reason for going the paint route is that the camera bag I did started off black and the day pack I wish to do is bright red.

Did you do stitch-and-glue for the canoe? That's a fun process.

I'm very tempted to try the "spray paint", likely will. I like how you can mask off what you don't want changed vs. using dye, although I want to try that at some point as well.

For my "canoe" (really a pirouge with too much rocker) yes I did stitch and glue, but also did ribs...I didn't buy plans but instead looked at several builds on line, when I started to do it I think different concepts melted together in my head. The outcome is alright, but not "fine boat building" pretty crude in some parts, but fun as hell. And it floats, has taken me off land for hrs at a time trying to catch fish, drinking beer etc, etc. I can't wait to build another...

Got around to doing the day pack today. I never did get around to getting any more khaki, but this works, and I can fix it later if I decide to bother.

Yep. I don't know where it is; could be anywhere.

In seriousness though, I'm going to have to prepare the surface. The lightest scratch by fingernail seems to be scraping it from the aluminum. Very smooth anodization and/or a not properly degreased object which spends a lot of time in sweaty hands seems to have defeated the mighty rustoleum for now.

When I did the canoe....aluminum...had to use a surface prep...(think it was actually acid based) so the paint would "stick".

Just about everyone is making camo tape these days. You can even purchase the self clinging stuff. Works good on just about everything.
