currants

hello all.i am new to this group.
we have some land in crater lake national park in oregon.
for so long we have been trying to clean our land.
i have been clipping down these crazy bushes.its like nothing can make them not
grow back.
finally a neighbor out there told me those are currants.
sure enough .i am now trying to get it where the bushes produce more currants.
also i am not cutting them down anymore.
they seem to also have cocoons of webs on some of the branches.looks like some kind
of worms on them.i have been clipping those off and putting in a bag and then
burning.
so any thoughts or experiences on wild currants and how to cultivate them?

We have black currants. The good news is they will spread be it ever so slowly. They have enough natural pectin to make their own jelly. Lot's of recipes on the web thingie. Bitter as all get out off the vine though.

can i fertilize the currant bushes?
what kind of fertilzer?i am thinking something with acid i would suppose.
can i pull up a currant bush and put it in my garden and fertilize them ?
what are those cocoons of caterpillars about?
they dont seem to be bitter as much as not much taste...thank u for the recipes and your responses.

There are several varieties of currants. Some are sweeter than others. As far as care -- this might be of use. http://www.garden.org/plantguide/?q=show&id=3374

Currants! My grandparents used to have red currant bushes in their backyard. You can make a fantastic jelly with those....it's particularly good with roast chicken or pork. If the birds didn't eat them all, we could usually count on Nanny setting a jar of home made red currant jelly on the table with supper when we visited. Although, this being her, I think she preferred having well fed birds to making red currant jelly, so she didn't do much to discourage them.


I seem to recall she used a lot of sugar when she made it. Like, even considering it was Jelly. But this was 20-some years ago, and Nanny always did have a sweet tooth, so who knows?
