From what I understand, viruses and parasites are different. But, I ain't no microbiologist.

they are different, I wasn't sure thats why i said I think they are. I do know they will make a sick as a dog!!!

Viruses are much smaller than cysts. They'll pass right through a water filter. That's why you still need to treat the water if you filter it.

just curious here, where do the brain eating amoebas they are getting in FL fall into the size category? THAT is some scary stuff.

It's called Naegleria fowleri and they are pretty large. Any filter with an ABSOLUTE pore size of 1 micron or smaller will block them.

They were a problem in a lot of texas lakes a year or two ago, claimed a couple lives. haven't heard any reports of that this year!

I'm guessing it's due to youngsters tend to ingest lake water more than adults do.

Um...filters don't really "kill" anything do they? Don't they just filter it out? If you want to kill the bad stuff don't you have to "treat",that is dose, the water with bleach or iodine? I am asking here not saying? I know I back wash my filter regularly and wash it with a 1 to 10 bleach solution when I get back home. Just the filter cartridge not the whole rig. I just use soap and water on the rest of it.

It depends on the filter. Some, like Katadyn's Mini Ceramic Filter have silver impregnated ceramic filters. Others include a chemical filter in addition to the ceramic. Most just block the bugs as you said.

It seems that it enters through the sinuses. Probably why it is associated with jumping and diving into water and other activities usually done more often by younger people.

Yeah, my days of jumping and diving have slowed down a bit. Today it's all about slipping and falling.
