    Default Save The Potato Water!!!

After you boil your potatoes don't throw out the water!! Some of the starch in the potatoes will migrate into the water. What you have is potato starch that can be used as a thickening agent for your mashed potatoes, soups, stews, gravies and even breads. It can used in place of regular water.

If you are allergic to wheat or corn you can use it instead of wheat flour or cornstarch as a thickener. It's also gluten free. Plus you get some of the vitamins that were in the potatoes.

If you aren't going to use it right away you can store it in the fridge for up to 24 hours or freeze it.

AND....you can use it to clean carpets, wool garments and delicate clothing. Crazy huh?

    Doesn't just apply to potatoes.
Summer squash, beans, carrots, corn...any of that water can be saved and used in soup stocks, breads, mixed in potatoes, fed to your house plants or your chickens. Corn has a lot of starch in it too.

knew it had nutritional value...had no idea about its other uses...good stuff!

(feeding to chickens is a great idea!)

I wonder if rabbits would enjoy it as well?

How about adding to the worm bed? Might also be a good idea?

If you like sourdough biscuits, pancakes, bread, etc., potato water makes a great catalyst for making your sourdough starter. Very simple, too.

In a glass (or plastic) bowl, pour 2 cups of warm potato water.
Add 1½ or two cups all purpose flour.
    Add one teaspoon of sugar.

Mix well, cover the bowl with cheese cloth, set on the kitchen counter and let it alone until the bubbles in the batter appear. Add a bit more flour and let it work some more. A couple or three days ought to do.

You'll have a sourdough starter that'll make some very good biscuits, bread, etc.

I've made my sourdough starter like this for years and really like the results.

I thought I'd get ahead of that one, knowing how some minds are firmly in the gutter.
