They were otherwise occupied and move rather slowly on land. The people filming weren't really in any danger unless they wanted to play referee and try to separate them.

That's pretty relative if you ask me. Have you ever seen how slow I move on land? I once got outrun by a slug. A slow one at that! It would be much better if their feet were nail to the ground. But, hey, that's just me.

The can out run a horse for the first 40 yards. Faster than I can run. I have had a couple of close calls while they were migrating from pond to pond in the dry season and I stay away from them if both of us are on land.

Since I have never been chased by a gator while I was on a horse I googled the speed of one. A small gator can run up to 12 - 15 miles an hour. A large one about7 to 8. I just might be able to get away from one on my horse, Hi Oh Silver Away!

I will wager that their has never been a documented race against a horse and a gator.

Gators are capable of explosive lunges. The runs that people talk about are the frantic runs that you see them make into water from land. At best small gator will run much like a dog. Pushing its front legs under it while extending its back legs to the front. Most of the time not even that.

The big gator let its adversary go because it felt threatened by the man.

I have video on a hard drive here where I am in an encounter with a 9' female in a field. It is off of a dead hard drive. But, I am directly in front of the gator about 5' away. She gets up and turns and lies back down facing away from me. I say on tape "Is that all your not going to hiss or nothing and she stands back up and hisses. LOL

I have never experienced and aggressive gator on land. These gators went back in the water when the man approached. The man is what made them stop their territorial fight.

10' to 15' is more than far enough to be considered safe. You can go to Shark Valley and have 12' gators walk in between tourist groups at the overlook.

Body language with gators is everything.

15' is a little close for me. That's why I'm 1000 miles away. Let's see them run at top speed for that distance.

If an alligator swallows your arm while you are holding a golf ball, does that count as a "hole in one?

It depends on whether you are out of bounds at the time. I went to retrieve a ball once that landed out of bounds near a water hazard in Tampa. After being informed that Gus the Alligator lived in said water hole I took a stroke penalty and dropped a new ball. I hate to take a stroke penalty too. I like my arm a lot more though.
