Default Screw going into woods alone with just a backpack - I'll take a RV

I've just decided if I ever go into the forest alone I'll take a RV or van with me loaded with supplies. First of all you could store alot more stuff that way. You could take loads of food, a stove, a fridge, sleeping bags, an extra tent, fishing gear, hunting gear, rain gear, cooking gear, a TV and radio, books, a bunch of stuff. That would be alot easier than just hiking into the woods with just a backpack and minimal supplies.

Naah. I just grow trees in my house and put up murals of the outdoors. No need to even leave my house.

I let a squirrel loose in the house once. Boy was that a mistake. It kept leaping at the murals trying to catch a limb but is just kept slamming into the wall. It was unconscious when I finally took it back outside. Fortunately, it finally came around. The thing still gives me the finger every time it sees me.

I just got back from a weekend camping trip with my 7 year old son. What a blast. However, I felt like I packed for a two week vacation rather than a 2 day stay... Took lots of stuff that we didn't use, but had it there just in case. But going with just the essentials can be fun too. Besides, owning an RV will cost thousands just to buy fuel for it!

I'm going for the whole Bill and Melinda look. I'm gonna install LCD's to fully cover my walls and just put rotating natural landscapes up. That way, one minute I'm in the pristine forest, the next in a dense double canopy jungle, and the next on a mountain top in Sweden. Add in some scented air fresheners and a few nature CD's and who needs to leave their house? hell, if you leave the landscape up long enough you could tie a humidifier into the climate control, patch into the system and get real realistic. Only, without the bugs.

A tropical rain system in the great room? Now that would be cool.

You could install those mist machines they use on the sidelines of football games too. It'd give a nice amount of humidity for the rain forest room.

I recently went to a conference in Orlando at one of the fancy resorts (Gaylord Palms). I don't know what it was called, but there was a giant courtyard in the center of the resort that was all closed in. I'm guessing 2-3 acres indoors. Trees, streams, different themed areas - shipwreck in a lagoon that was a bar & grill - castle - rainforest. Breezes, wildlife sounds and at night when you looked up at the giant glass enclosure they had different star constellations projected on it. You really forgot that you were indoors. They kept it at a constant 72 degrees (outside it was close to 100).

I just got back from a solo hike and had went on one yesterday... nothing like it. I am ready to chunk my GPS for one thing. Between the cloud coverage and rain.. it was mostly useless. Everything else was great. Yesterday I was going to hike the backwoods by my house but it sounded like someone was using it for a gun range. Going to have to have DNR come back out again. So I ended up going to a state park trail instead. Nice and solitude... didn't see anyone on the trails.

I have a pickup and a pickup bed trailer. The trailer has a camper on it. I can take all that I want with me and then some.

Several times a year, I go out with what I would take if I were going for weeks or months at a time.

I am not a fan of the grab a bag and head for the woods. If I am forced to head for the hills, I will be taking enough gear to make my week or several months stay as comfortable as I can.

The winter gear pack and the summer pack are adjusted to the time of year and with enough gear to carry me over a few seasons. Winter cloths go in summer and seeds and gardening equipment come along in winter.

Mbarnatl, what trail did you hike? I think we live in the same neck of the woods, and my wife and I were talking last night about hiking this coming weekend. It'd be nice to go someplace that isn't too crowded.

Saturday I went to Elachee Nature Science Center in Gainesville and on Sunday I went to Tallulah Gorge State Park.

The crowds depends on the weather.

We did Tallulah last year, but have not been to the Nature Center in Gainesville. Maybe we'll give that a try. Thanks for the info!

I've seen that movie. I saw it first in the theaters when it first came out like 2 years ago and then got the video one time after. Great movie it is. It has some spectactular scenery!

I hiked from the sofa to the frige, saw a wild dog I named "Buster', a mean azz native I named "Wife" and one of them pygmy's i named "son" and still barely made it back to the sofa on the return trip.
There is no greater solitude than that of the Tracker in the forest, unless perhaps it's that of the wolf in the wilderness.

I think I will just get the beagle wet, let him in and breathe the aroma. Maybe a nature screensaver. Nah, that's going too far.
