So this is how liberty dies.....With thunderous applause.
The Survivors Club (The secrets and science that could save your life)--by Ben Sherwood (if you get anything, make sure you get this; it's a great read, useful, fascinating, real people examples)
The Stand--Steven King (just finished it...gripping, mostly plausible...good winter read)
The Last Centurion--John Ringo
Earth Abides--George R Stewart (amazing, entirely different, makes you think)
Lights Out--David Crawford
Alas, Babylon--Pat Frank
Lucifer's Hammer--Jerry Pournelle and Larry Niven
The Vince Flynn novels are good reads. They concern a couple of CIA operators who fight to stop great security threats in the U.S. I believe Flynn was a CIA officer at one time.
Nelson DeMille writes very well. His usual character is a tough NYPD detective who works with the Feds to thwart vicious international criminals who pose threats to the U.S. DeMille was an infantry officer commanding a rifle platoon in Vietnam. He is no stranger to "action."
If you like history (which I do), you could get the collected works of the historian, Will Durant. Fantastic read and information. Enlightening too, as to how things have never changed in Human Nature and Human Behavior. Only technology has changed.

I wondered. I don't think he'd have any problem pickin' 'em up. Well, the lighter ones anyway. The heavy ones he'd probably have to drag.

John Grisham's collection of short stories--"Ford County"--hilarious, well written:
http://www.jgrisham.com/ford-county/
One of the stories:
"Three good ol’ boys from rural Ford County begin a journey to the big city of Memphis to give blood to a grievously injured friend. However, they are unable to drive past a beer store as the trip takes longer and longer. The journey comes to an abrupt end when they make a fateful stop at a Memphis strip club."
