I hosted an international group some years back. Some were from Singapore, some from Malaysia (he was a character) and some from Latin America. The guy from Singapore was scarred chitless. He wanted to know where all the police were. I told him they were around if we needed them and asked him if he was concerned for some reason. "Shootem up bang, bang," was his reply. I asked him to explain a bit more. "Al Capone, Baby Face Neeelson, Pretty Boy Floyd." I couldn't help but laugh. Way too many late night movies on his channel.

I guess if you live in a country where weapons are tightly controlled I could see why you might have some fear, founded or not, in coming to the U.S. - Probably the same fear I have about going to Mexico. Oh, wait minute. They tightly control guns down there. Hmmmmm.

Well, I have pictures of a Chinese national exchange student holding several firearms in my house. Didn't seem scared at all.

We have many Chinese exchange students at Michigan Tech U. and some that I have encountered are buying and shooting various firearms. One had a KelTec 9mm carbine and was shooting at the schools indoor pistol range when I was there one day.

We hosted a German exchange student several years ago. He elected to go back home after the fall semester, afraid he was academically falling behind his classmates back in Wuppertal. Good kid and an excellent student too! It painted a dismal picture about the quality of education we're providing our children here in the states.

I'd say this is a much bigger problem than fear of gun violence.

When I lived in Los Angeles I used to sometimes shoot at the Tujunga Canyon Angeles Range. One afternoon I was there on the pistol range. A young man I knew from a local gun club came out in a van type bus. He was Japanese American. With him were perhaps a dozen Japanse tourists, men and several women. They trooped to the pistol range where the Japanese American man began unloading several bags filled with handgun cases.

He unzipped the cases and laid out at least a dozen pistols and revolvers on the table. Another large box was filled with ammo. After setting up targets down range he then began showing the tourists how to handle and shoot the handguns. They listened carefully to him as he spoke fluent Japanese and coached them in the safety measures, sight picture, etc., etc. Not one of the Japanese tourists showed any fear or apprehension, but a tremendous amount of interest.

One by one as the young man watched, they banged away and had a great time. A whole lot of bullets went downrange into the targets. When they took a short break, I talked with the young man with whom I was acquainted. I said, "Looks to me like you're not ever going back to Manzanar."

He smiled and said, "S.M., you ain't kiddin'."

A good friend of mine had two young German exchange students staying with him for a year. My friend had taken them to a range where they fired a number of his firearms and enjoyed it thoroughly. He and I took them to the big L.A. Gun Show in Pomona. This was before the communistnazis of Calif., had outlawed private transactions, EBUG semi-auto firearms, etc. (EBUG = Evil Black Ugly Gun. )

It was a great show. The two young German students were not afraid to be in the presence of dozens of thousands of firearms and thousands of firearms owners, but were absolutely fascinated with what they saw and experienced. Not any mass shootings, not even one murder, just people enjoying themselves and exercising their Rights and Freedom.

The German students expressed how they wished they could have the same Rights and Freedoms in Germany, but the "authorities" prohibited them to own most firearms and the few they could own were strictly controlled. The "hoops" one had to jump through to own a firearm were very restrictive. Of course, German criminals did not bother to obey any of the laws: only the honest citizens.

I think there are not nearly as many people in foreign countries who are "afraid to come to America," as Mr. Kerry and his brainwashed ilk believe.

We should care because were a sympathetic caring nation, and we should make sure that ever one that comes here from a foreign land gets what ever they want and need, with no thought or caring about the people that were born and raised here.

I personally dont give a rat's arse what people from other countries think about our gun laws & rights... Its none of there business nor concern.

I work with a Chinese immigrant (who happens to have several graduate degrees in different fields). She is very curious about guns, and when things cool off in her personal life, I or another coworker may end up taking her to a range to try some guns out. She's even asked me to take a couple unspent rounds to work for her to see. This is generally the attitude I've seen from many visitors and immigrants from other places. There has been some wonderment, as some folks grow up being told that guns are everywhere here (as in everyone carries one, has one in the car, and several at home ... being able to buy ammo everywhere, guns right off the shelf, etc.), but mostly curious about what it is like to shoot a gun. Rarely is someone afraid, though some are nervous about the risk.

Depending on where some of these folk come from, chances are, the men have, or will serve in the military as part of a peace time draft. Something I believe in for both sexes, no exception. (But that's a whole 'nother story best left for another thread.)

Well, Kerry's boss tells us that 90% of Americans approve of background checks. I guess that Kerry's statement holds as much truth as his boss'.
