I started the tomatoes this afternoon.
They are in potting soil under the grow lights. 12 cups ready to grow.

Hmmm .... so far its just you n me that have started plants indoors ... We have a very short growing season way up here so I start em up early ....
THE PROSPECTOR ! !
Last year I started way too early, I have my seeds my starter soil and cups and the lights ready. Just pondering when to start, weird weather and a long summer!
Keep in mind the problem may be extremely complicated, though the "Fix" is often simple...
"Teaching a child to fish is the "original" introduction to all that is wild." CS
"How can you tell a story that has no end?" Doc Carlson
I haven't started any for a while now.....
Been buying them from the horticulture class at the tech school, while i was going there.... They do have a real good selection and very reasonable.
In the past I have started as many as 32 flats at a time under lights, but doing a cost comparision and the reduced number that I plant these days....makes more sense to support the school.
Ended up starting plants for a lot of other people.....so i have just slowed that down.

I'm going the seedling route this year from the local nursery. Have to build new planters for them first - this may be the last cold snap for the year for us.
my entire garden for veggies this year is going to be planted in peat moss and manure of all sorts .. they will be planted in ice cream pails .. ( weedless Im hoping )
tried a few last year with good results ... I have 200+ pails to plant .. I need to fill my mason jars up again and im hoping to do it with home grown stuff ..will post pics I it progresses ... I grew corn and potatoes last yuear with excellent results ... Brace the corn ,,, It falls over in the wind !!LOL ! I have been growing Kohlrabi
inside all winter in a window ... results arent great but not awful either !

Starting mine later, after Six Nations Rugby has finished. Not sure whether that's entirely a good idea..... Beer and snacks are at the ready and it could get messy!

Crash, do you have posted on here (or elsewhere) the pictures and info on your container system (it was you and not CelticWarrior I believe) that was on the site that must not be named and now no longer exists? At our new place we are planning a huge garden in 2014 when we live here full time, but I have all those containers left over from the condo that I could use. Here we have water available and I am trying to rig some timed overhead watering but I recall there were tubes in yours or his that made this almost not necessary. Ok, thanks, SG

What kind of ice cream container is that if I may ask? I have only seen the 1 gallon?

Started a few things last month. Tomatoes and peppers are starting off weak but the tobacco and herbs are doing well. Garlic survived the harsh Florida winter...lol. Am scramblin' for seeds this year, had mice get into rabbit feed then moved onto my seed stash and cleaned me out. Got one in particular that trips the trap and refuses to get caught so it's about to become a Tom and Jerry cartoon here as I chase the damn thing down with my 12 Ga. To many loose cats here to use poison on em, although come to think of it, it's probably safe to do since they don't appear to be catchin' em. lol

I started most of my plants in January. Here they are mid-February:

Now, most are in the ground, and the cutworms like that. So far I've lost a tomato and a pepper

This evening, I'll be putting down DE and plastic collars.
Show off. I've got snow on the ground today.

We are still due snow one more time.
In KY winter ain't over till it snows on the buttercups!
I HAVE SPROUTS!!!!
8 of my 10 cups have green springs growing. I am not giving up on the other two yet, it has only been 4 days. I have had the grow lights on them 24/7.
If you didn't bring jerky what did I just eat?
We had a mouse problem over the winter, and like yours, it was too quick for the trap. On other people's recommendation, I bought a Hav-a-Hart live trap. However, the day before it arrived in the mail, his luck ran out and the plasticky de-Con one finally got 'im.
Anyhow, though I never got a chance to try it, apparently the Hav-A-Harts can be a real bear to set, but have a hair trigger, and will get the fastest meeses. YMMV.
Yay!
The rule around here is, when the mesquites start to leaf out, the danger of frost has passed.
Hard to believe that just last week, and on 2/20, we had hail:

Just had a peek at the pails .. they are 11.4 litre pails .. 3 USA gallons .... I have grown everythiung in these before .. I have a non stop supplky of fertilizer from my goats, tirkeys, chickens, pigens and ducks .. I feed ... they poop ..it fertilizes ... works well ... i put peat moss sand and lots of last yrs composted manure in the buckets all mixed up .. holes drilled in bottoms and rock at the bottom for drainage ... I grew up in the greenhouse business so I am very familiar with growing our own goodies ..I will be planting a couple hundred pails this season ...plus a small garden plot for garliuc and herbs ... soil is way to acidic to grow much other than blueberries and pine trees ... Thanks for asking ! ( i get the pails at the snack shack where I work summertime ) I' the cook ...
THE PROSPECTOR ! !
