This is a very interesting thread! I have been giving this some thought, while reading, and agree with several of the points alredy made.

    1) Drinking animal blood for thirst will likely have little effect on satiety. Blood is loaded with nutrients, salts and electrolytes. This cna be either a great thing or a bad thing, depending on your body's current state. I would think it would be a good "quick fix" for no water, but not a long term solution.

    2) Rick mentioned blood borne pathogens. This is another concern I have. I would think the acidity of the stomach would deal with most blood born pathogens, I can think of. Some of the ones that come to mind, immediately, are: Tularemia, bartonella, rickettsial disease, leptospirosis and a host of parasites (worms). The concern, to me, is the intestinal worms. They should be able to handle the low pH of the animal's stomach, so why couldn't they survive ours? I am not a vet, though.

    3) I at my body weight in black and white puddings, in Ireland. Loved em!

    4) I have heard stories of people being instructed to remove small, baby birds' heads, and drink right out of the neck. This is a survival sitituation and unplesant, but it is a nourishing liquid.

I will do a little research and see what I can find. Great question!

(first post but I was inspired to join after reading the thread)

for short term survival blood is NOT a substitute for water. Blood is full of protien and minerals that require water for your body to make enough use of. If you have enough water to drink it is a rich supply of nutrients.

For long term survival consumption of blood is a very good idea. If one is survial level farming/herding/hunting they should never waste nourishing, easy to process food. Blood sauasage and blood puddings are also pretty darned good eating if you ask me.

Make sure you cook it and you shouldn't have anything to worry about.
