    Default .45 acp/small primer

One more reason to stay away from Walmart Federal brand ammo.

I just ran into my first batch of .45 ACP brass loaded with small, pistol primers.

Now I find, after 45 years of reloading, that I will have to seperate my 45 brass as I reload.

If I was using a progressive press I would be going bonkers right now!

As it is I will have to deprime and reprime as a seperate operation, seperating the brass by primer size, off the press.
If you didn't bring jerky what did I just eat?

    I don't shoot a .45 apc, but I guess I never heard of this.....
Is it some imported ammo?.....Thanks for the heads up, though.

I didn't know there were different sized primers for 45 either. I don't reload, but need to store away that info for the days that I start.

I don't shoot .45 acp, but My friends around here go through a bunch of it.(And save the brass for reloading.) I'll be sure to pass on that info.

    Thanks.

This is a box of Federal I bought from Walmart.

I have only bought two boxes of factory .45 ammo in 20 years and this is the first of the small primer stuff I have found. I am really glad I have not had to worry about seperating brass by primer size for reloading all these years. Justy another hastle.

I am in the same boat. I was given a 1000 rounds of small pistol primer .45 ACP brass. I just keep it seperate...

I just discovered the same thing (i.e., the federal small pistol primers). I have thousands of Federal 45 acp brass with large pistol primer pockets. What a pain in the butt this change becomes! Does anybody know if this is the wave of the future? Almost as important is... what primers does one use to reload these new federals? Are ordinary small pistol primer satisfactory or should one be thinking about using a small "magnum" pistol primer. Thanks in advance for your time.

I don't really understand what Wal-Mart has to do with this. It is a pain that another step has been added to the process, but that is a decision Federal made.

StrikeJag: I don't know squat about pistol/rifle reloading, but I know alot about shotshell and with that you cannot just swap out a primer just because "it fits". Even simply changing primers can cause a huge change in chamber pressure that could cause firearm damage, injury or death. I would reference a reloading manual, reloading manufacturer, or the original manufacturer of the casing. I know Federal does have reloading info for their shotshells, it wouldn't surprise me if they did for their pistol/rifle as well.

If you pick up any white box Winchester 45 ACP you will find the same thing. winchester started doing their 45 cheap stuff with small primers about 3 years ago. It will say "non-reloadable on the box and on the headstamp it has "NT". And yes I use a progressive press and I just about went nuts the first time I ran into them.
