Default issuing a challange to learn and share

want to learn about your enviroment? then stop....for me this is the secret to learning the bush, you can apply it to the desert, mountains, ect..
I just go out in the bush doesn't have to be far and i stop and sit and observe. the area comes back to life and i see more animals, and learn from them, also the way i learned about wild edibles is thru observation.
Have you ever been out doing your dirt time and something seems out of place? rocks or trees, you think to yourself "funny i don't recall that branch being down or the rock broken off"
I think we rush thru life with goals to accomplish, i learned long ago to stop, put down my distractions and observe.
So i say to you go out and varying hours of the day and night, light and dark, sit for what you can, althought you will notice as time goes on you can sit still longer, watch what happens around you then come back and tell us about it on this thread.
I hope you take up this challenge as i look forward to learning from you.
    cheers

It is what I do hunting (when I get to go). Once I went hunting only to find another hunter in my stand (miscommunication). So I took the high road and walked deeper in the woods and took a seat beneath a tree, I was being extra still being used to sitting in a tree. A young doe walked up and smelled my gun, never blew at me or anything just checked me out and walked off. One of my most memorable hunts.
Keep in mind the problem may be extremely complicated, though the "Fix" is often simple...

Get some predator calls and practice calling. One does not need to kill them, they are fun to watch. I am relatively new to this, and started as one more way to get meat if the SHAFT.

Side Note: It is educational to talk to the trees. Siddhartha would talk to the river. The river is very smart.

TGhis is what I call going into my "zone" used to take awhile to settle down on the first day of a hunt, hiking, picking mushrooms, what ever.
Just sit still, for at least 15 minutes and wait for the woods to come to life.....don't move, but have all your other senses on High....It is always amazing.

I hear ya, I have been known to just sit in my garden and watch the action around you....you really don't have to go anywhere, just sorta stop, look and listen.
Oh yeah, and leave that freaking cell phone at home!

My Grandfather always wore VERY warm coveralls when he was hunting. Said it made him move slower, and he saw more. I do also tend to dress warmer when I am in the woods. Sometime Grandparents do know a thing or two.

That right there is just wrong!

On another note- As much as I love primitive skills- isn't 'net technology great- brings together folk with 100 degrees betwixt them!

Per the slow down stuff- it truly is my greatest challenge. I must be ADD or something. My mind chatter goes on at the same rate of fire as a mini gun- and never runs out of ammo. Not so noticable in the city but in the woods it's like SHUT UP already!! Anybody else find this a near hopeless struggle?

    My brain

And my brain misses that much too!

This is a big problem for a lot of people......In years past, I did a fairly high stress job...so it took me a couple of days to settle down
When my nephew wanted to go hunting with me....the first practice was sitting still for 15 minutes with out saying anything or moving.

That was tough for him as I timed him, and it wasn't till he could do it that it finally started to happen for him...but he wanted to go, and earned his way.

Once you can do it, it becomes easier, most of the time....LOL.

I just learned a bit of new info today.

23 degrees and 20+- mph wind sent me to the NOAA site. I was not aware that we had been using a modified wind chill chart for a decade. No wonder I have been feeling colder than I used to, they have changed the chart by around 20 freekin' degrees warmer at zero temp!

I also had a bit of myth evaporated. They claim that wind chill will not cool an inantimate object below the ambiant temp. Which makes sense or seeking shelter would be a wasted effort. I have always been told that vehicles soaked up the wind chill just like animals or people.

    Hugh?....I did not know that.
The poor old truck sitting out in the wind always protests the temp and wind.....by giving me a hard time not wanting to turn over.

I thought it was funny that in Louisiana they start give wind chills factor at about 55 degrees...guess they don't want you to get a wind burn on your legs while wearing shorts????/

I like going fishing right at dawn in the spring. Either on the lake or at the ocean. On the lake you can push out without using the motor and anchor near one of the islands. I've seen beaver and muskrat swimming from island to shore come right with a foot of the boat. It's really nice if you get a pink fog morning, and you can watch it burn off. On the beach I've seen foxes and quite a bit of wildlife just going about their business. I can watch fiddler crabs building their burrows for hours. I've found though that if I sit too quietly after 10am at my surfcasting spot, I usually end up waving off some jimoke in a power boat motoring up right in front of me (it's a fairly well known spot but hard to get to by walking. Most people just don't walk out there). Why they don't see the two sandspikes and the 8' fishing rods is beyond me. Had one idiot snag my line and totally spool my reel and never stopped. I can only hope he had a wonderful afternoon getting that off his prop.

That is because 55 degrees is the upper margin for hypothermia. It is difficult to believe, when you live in WI, that people can die of exposure at 55 degrees.

I guess.......they also give you the overnight freeze in hours....as a lot of houses are built up on piers and water lines can freeze.

I often wondered about this, but I'm guessing its because of humidity and summer heat?

The rule of thumb I was taught as a fly fishing guide is that if the water temp plus the air temp does not equal 100* plus, WATCH FOR hypothermia!
(this is regarding just being out in the air...hiking in, etc.)
