My better half might be offered a transfer to Alaska. I am wondering what some of you like Sourdough, Alaskan Survivalist, Klak and others that live there like and dislike about the State.
Thanks Sam

There is plenty to love about Alaska. It was difficult for my wife and I to adjust but there was more to it than just moving to AK. The thing I like the most is the freedom. It's the last place in America that truly gives you that free feeling. I also love the wildlife and scenery here. What I don't like is the long dark winters and the trapped feeling. I'm very thankful I got the opportunity to live here but am glad we are moving to Florida this summer.
Alaska to Florida, for how long, who knows...
The Greater Anchorage Area including Wasilla, Eagle River, Palmer, Big Lake, Military Bases......That whole area is now grossly over populated. But that is where the employment is. The key to the winter's is to embrace them, ski, snow machine, snowshoe, just go for drives. There is a boatload of information on: http://forums.outdoorsdirectory.com/...ting-to-Alaska
And everything south of Anchorage is a tourist trap. Fishing and hunting is so regulated and restricted that 70 percent of the people that live in the bush get food stamps or have some form of public assistance. Alaska doe's not exist anymore. There is no free range left and every squre inch is claimed by some federal agency or native corporation. Less than 1 percent of the land is privately owned so land is over priced. Drinking and drug related crimes are the highest in the nation along with the murder rate. It is only by comparison to the rest of the world does it have anything going for it all. It may seem like wilderness to some but if you come you will take note of just how fast it is disappearing and even what is now will be gone. It WAS "the last frontier".
That's not exactly a ringing endorsement AS, but your honesty is refreshing.
It has to be especially hard for you since you were born and raised there. I only wish there was one place that stayed true (whether I live there or not), that's has not fallen prey to everything we hate in other places.
Keep in mind the problem may be extremely complicated, though the "Fix" is often simple...
"Teaching a child to fish is the "original" introduction to all that is wild." CS
"How can you tell a story that has no end?" Doc Carlson
When President Bush set aside some kind of wildlife preserve near Hawaii my initial thought was this is going to be his bug out location.
But yeah, I think I know how the Indians must have felt.

I'm pretty happy here.
Yes, my town is a tourist trap, but that has been a money making opportunity for me when I was doing leather work full time. The laws here are still better then anywhere else. We still retain the highest per capita of veterans at 17%.
A 30 minute walk down the beach at either end of town and I am in the wilderness.
I had a compass, but without a map, it's just a cool toy to show you where oceans and ice are.
Because a survival situation carries an aura of timelessness, a survivor cannot allow himself to be overcome by it's duration or quality. A survivor accepts the situation as it is and improves it from that standpoint. Prologue from Outdoor Survival Skills by Larry Dean Olsen
In another post a while back you said that you look at everything through the prism of the end is near because you view everything with a doom and gloom objective lens. I suppose with that outlook I can see your point, but not sure how objective it really is, especially for those that don't share your prophecies of doom.
Alaska Pros and Cons.
Pros generally can be found on street corners late at night.
Cons live at 1400 E. 4th Ave. in Los Anchorage until their sentence is up or they get paroled.

Water barrels collect water. Have that? Water that doesn't run into the sewer wouldn't be taxed. Right? Therefore my tax would be much less. The thing about humor is once you have to explain it then........

No, I don't get post #16--2D. I just can't even wrap my mind around it.
I know you were joking.
