    Default Free Topo Maps

I did a search on the forums and didn't see anything on this. If I'm a Johny Come Lately, my apologies.

I thought I'd post this link to free topo maps for any location in North America.
It allows you to view and print the maps for free.

If you have access to a large-format printer, or are content with taping the 8.5x11's together, use http://www.mytopo.com/search.cfm

the neat thing about this is you can actually get a 3500x2500 sized image if you jump through all the "add to cart" hoops. ON the page before you actually have to pay, there's a link named "preview your map" which opens a huge image file that can be saved to your desktop.

You can chose areal photos as well.

EDIT: Just a sample map of Copper Harbor, MI

Is it not easyer to by a collection of maps in a supermarker rather than ordering them off the web ?

I personaly get mine from a map shop close to my home and then print out other information from google earth (<- Highly reccomended for checking out terain)

Hey, Tony. We're talkin' free over here. You know how we yanks are. Always looking for something for nothing. (Or when no one else is looking).

Ditto on Google Earth. Good stuff from a monolithic, egotistical company. Oops, sorry. Is my bad taste showing?

I don't know about Scotland, but the kind of Topo maps I use are not sold there.

Topos are sold at the county travel store (you know... for *gasp* tourists) and at park ranger stations. At least in my area

    Thanks for the bump, BUT,

This stuff might have been "'at one time, first post was in 2007, but I get nervous, as there is generally no longer a free lunch.

I didn't get real deep into this site, as there is a "free" 14 day trial, so I didn't go any farther.

Generally they will ask for a credit card number, so you can use their site "free", but beware that some sites will start billing you after that 14 days.
Trying to get out of this is like is like trying to flip a booger off your finger.

Used to be a big fan of Terra Fly, (spelling?) you could print out topo's and aerial with GPS coordinates, and by moving the mouse you could "fly" over the terrain.

    No so much, any more.

Google Earth is hard to beat. It's nice have the view in your hands on paper and on the horizon at the same time. Sort of idiot proof ... for most idiots.

What a great site, thanx. I found a cemetary that I've heard about, but never did find it. Can someone tell me how to delete things from my "Favorites", I'm teaching myself on the computer and havn't figured that out yet.

Put your cursor (mouse arrow thingie) on what it is that you want to delete. Click your right mouse button. On that menu, you'll see a delete option. Move that mouse thingie to it and click the left mouse button. It'll ask you if you really want to delete it. Click yes.

Just don't click on "Destroy the world". If you do, then click on "No". We will all be grateful.

Topo maps are all but useless down here. But, when I get a signal I use google maps or earth.

I have been thinking of getting a new GPS. I am looking for something that will show aerial images without a cellular signal and the Delorme PN series seems to work best.

I am contemplating getting the PN-60W. What do you all think of this and would a sat phone and the PN-40 be a better option?

If you watch shows like I shouldn't be alive. Something like this would knock out about 90% of the shows content.

Thanks for the topozone link, i used to use them but lost he link and forgot about it. Batch i recently bought the PN-30 and i not impressed at all. mostly because it has trouble holding a signal in trees.
