    Default Physical Training for Survival

I am just creating this thread to see what everyone else is doing to keep themselves fit enough for survival. By this I mean that if you can’t get from point A to point B your stuffed. If you can’t gather food or water or lift branches to build shelter. So what are you guys doing to keep fit for survival?

Maybe a moderator could change "Tanning " to Training.

for awhile my work out was heavy dead lifts, side presses farmer walks and kettle bells. I got out of the habit and a funny thing about habits. if a habit is good for ya it's easy to get away from it but if it's bad for ya it sticks to ya like crazy glue.

The Ol bait and switch I see lol

I am a fire fighter and am required to be in decent shape but being in decent shape for tennis is not being in decent shape for fire fighting. The keys are Endurance and mechanics.

Endurance is gained by cardio but the circuit routines some of us do consist of explosive movements that we need for our job.

Ex. circuit 1 - 1 min body drag( 275lbs) - 1min tire flip ( 150 lbs) - 1min 10lbs sledge hammer swings - 1min and over hand hose drag ( 50lbs) once done rest 1 min and repeat once more.

Distance jogging with sprints is also good for conditioning.

if you are in a SHTF moment your body will be under much greater stress than normal and having to exert the added effort adds even more. Number one killer of Fire fighters is Heart attack and usually occurs after the fire is over. Guess what the number one killer in the out of doors is as it related to health .... Heart attack.

If you physically can not preform the task needed then you should seriously think about sheltering in place and how you plan to remain there.

Changed it. Didn't want the "tanning" to attract any thong pics.

Eating healthier, losing weight, walking more, in the gym a few days a week, doing more "physical" work.

For some people, a little tan may help. Could you imagine a lilly white somebody having to spend all day in the summer sun, finding water/food/shelter? They'd be burnt slam up.

    Great topic!

I jog, do long walks in the forests, bicycle 20km a day-5 days a week(to work and back), push-ups when I feel like it. I work in a ship spare part warehouse, very physical job so I don't do gym. I do martial arts also!

What kind of survival are you training for? Wouldn't that sort of dictate what kind of training you do?

Go out in the woods as much as you can and do some cardio stuff.
I had a compass, but without a map, it's just a cool toy to show you where oceans and ice are.

I do a lot of these things to keep in shape for them and do weightlifting, cals and lots and lots of hinking and walking to stay in shape enough. I can't run for long distances like I used to, smoke too much, but seem to get around quite well other than that.

You can never be too healthy.

I'm training the body and soul to survive the everyday with as few "dings" as possible before I actually face anything more challenging. That's what I call my own personal basic training which I stick to 90% of the time: healthy diet, cardio & strength training, good grooming and regular Drs. check-ups.
It takes no more time than say, maintaining your house or a vehicle (think of Ken's check list) and since I have neither, I figured I'd treat my body at least as well.
What I wish I had time to add is some kind of a personal defense sport like Krav Maga. Then I'd feel better about come what may.

Alaskan terrain is hard to move in but it is not so much a matter of strenght. You need to develop a longer stride and develop a different muscles. Muscles need to be worked for greater range of motion and rather than lifting weights you need to lift yourself. This operates muscles in the direction they will be used climbing. Cardio is always good for health and pumping the sludge out of your system. The body is full of all kinds of filters and when ever I start feeling bad I workout and get the blood pumping through those filters. I use two machines so I can workout on my schedule despite the weather and have the convenience of home use. My bones and joints are showing the wear so I like low impact workout. The Gazelle gives me a full body cardio workout stretching my stride without impact to joints. I also use a slider similar to Total Gym that stretchs and increases my range of motion. Strenght training should not be done daily. The way it works is you make small tears in the muscle that heal back bigger and stronger. You need a day in between to heal. So I alternate workouts between Slider and Gazelle each day. I am not a fitness freak that does it all the time. I just do it to maintain a certain level and as long as I can do what I do and feel good I don't work out. I don't want to become super human. It's more like physical therapy for me.

What I meant, I guess, is if your thoughts are something extreme like economic collapse or a social upheaval kind of thing then your training should be more military. Training with heavier loads, long distances, run and gun kind of things. That requires low body fat, high metabolism, high strength, high endurance.

If, on the other hand, your concern is weather related or local man made (chemical spill kind of thing) then your training would/could be much different.

Staying in shape is a good thing. Just as important is to know your body numbers like cholesterol, triglycerides, blood sugar and blood pressure. I just think what you are training for has a huge impact on how you train.

M, W, F I do weight lifting in the morning. M-F after work I either do Crossfit or Run. Then on the weekends I go hiking.

I have lost around 45 lbs, but I have gained about 10-12 back, but I still wear slimmer pants.

    Generally, I train for:

A: War. As I'm in regional reserve I'm supposed to keep my physical condition to the same level that is the minimum for professional soldiers. In cases of war or other major abnormality in functioning of the society I'll be called in to service. I need to beready for that.

B: Occupation. If we ever loose a war I want to be able to continue fighting even if the politicians decide to surrender. I need to be able to live of the ground and move fast in the forests.

C: Economic disaster. In case the economy really goes down, I want to be able to support myself and do my part in the community. This requires good physical condition.
