Is an AK-47 really worth $550

At a local gun shop they have a Chinese AK in moderately good shape, without any magazine and they are asking $550 for it. For a 30+ year old surplus weapon this seems ridiculous to me. Especially when you can go to Mitchell's Mausers and get a top of the line Mauser for a lot less.($200 or so less)
I know a Mauser is a bolt action and an AK is semiauto. so it's apples to oranges in some ways. Still what do you think?
On Gunbroker.com I see AKs in a lot better shape going for this price and more. It seems gun prices are just way higher than they were the last time I was in the market. something have more than doubled.

LOL....they're coming back down, some now. About a year ago, you would have thought that was a bargain. I went to plenty of gunshows, that AR-15 sold out in the first 15 minutes, and the few AK's that were left, were WASR-10's going for $600 to $700. I watched guys buy up russian, or surplus 7.62x39 at well over $400 per thousand.

Most handguns cost more than that. I would pay $550 for an AK without a doubt.

Your link has $515 for a NIB with magazine and bayonet, so I know the local guy is charging too much for a well used without anything else.

I guess the local gun shop owner did some web searching himself. The AK in his shop is now $450.

A lot of guys seem to be buying up AK-74s and newer because of the cheaper ammo.

It's a good price for the AK I'd buy it. About a month ago I bought an H&K 416 although it cost me $1700. But I'm an AR style guy anyway and its awesome. If you want a really good weapon your gonna pay, save for a better one is always my advice, but thats just my opinion.
