I would say my computer coupled with the internet and then my night vision. I could imagine living without the power grid, but not without everything electric. What a different world it would be; I'd be riding a horse wielding a musket

I would miss hot showers. You can still get hot water without electricity, and even a hot shower if you are clever. But nothing is quite the same as being able to turn a knob and have hot water in an instant.

I wouldn't particularly miss TV or movies - the book is usually better (especially THE Book, imo.) I would miss the internet, though. Where else could I find all the "wisdom" that is shared on this site?

Nah,hot water is still doable if you have hot water on demand,as in a propane powered tankless water heater,the only drawback is no tank for reserve water. Just stock up on "D" batteries as they create the spark to heat the water.

But then again,could get a wood fueled water heater like my Amish neighbors!

Sourdough,after working 9 hours yesterday in a building with no A/C,throwing feed,fencing and Quick-Crete,then using my jeep to pull logs outta a swamp,I needed that shower,LOL.

Yesterday I was going to some peoples house for dinner, so I got three quarts of water from the creek, but it on the wood stove for two hours, took the water outside in the yard, got naked, and washed. Got a few skeeter'bites, but no problems. Note: I use dish soap and not bar soap, as dish soap will rinse off in cold or cool water.

Good idea about dish soap--if it works on oil it'll work on anything.

In a world without electricity the only thing I missed was a nice hot shower after a long, hard, dirty day of work. The lake was a pretty good substitute though.

There were a lot of things I didn't miss when the electricity was out, in fact, I enjoyed them not being around. It was pretty nice coming home from work to a tv that was turned off and actually being able to look in the sky at night and see the stars and such.

The only thing I would ever seriously miss is indoor plumbing. If I can't flush, then surely it must be TEOTWAWKI especially here in the big city.

Well, hot showers are still possible. My Dad has a black shower bag that you fill with water and lay in the sun. Then hoist it into a tree. You could also put a metal container raised up and use a fire to heat the water.

You can bring a bucket of water to pour down the toilet and it will flush just fine. Course, you gotta tote the water to the toilet.

I wonder how they managed in NY before the 1890's? What was the tallest residential building at that time?

Could you imagine being stuck in an elevator at TEOTWAWKI? I know I was on an escalator once when the power went out. Stuck for four hours before I was rescued!

Not a problem, hoofing it that is. I do it all time. One never knows when something becomes out of order here in the city. Just the other day the escalators were being worked on in the 62nd St. Subway Station and I schlepped 4 loooooong floors (underground) up to Lexington St. carrying bags. That's one thing I can do. Just don't ask me to do my business in Central Park though--that would be a deal breaker.

My helper and I, along with another crew, were replacing faces lost on the Auto Nation building in downtown Fort Lauderdale. There was a line at the elevator to go from the cafeteria up. So, my helper says he'll race me up the stairs. We were on the 7th floor and were going to the 30th floor. We ran up those 24 flights. I know the math doesn't sound right. Just trust me here. We made it up before the guy who took the elevator had even finished his cigarette once getting off the elevator.

I was amazed at how quickly I was able to catch my breath. Just 5 years before that we were working a building in Miami and I would have to take a break after 6 flights carrying tools. Fresh paint and carpet made it hard to breath when you came out of the stairwell and when I made it to the window I thought I was going to die. LOL

But I would rather lose the electric than the water. Elec. went out early today, so no tv, computer, or lights, no problem. I just grabbed a glass of water and sat down and played a game with the kids.

We used small battery powered lanterns if we had to after bed time and hurricane lanterns after dark before bed time. I would guess the best solution would be to at least try and go before going to bed and keep a lighter and a candle near by for middle of the night runs.
