Think of it as a large container that is under pressure and leaking through a small hole. The pressure and contents are already leaving through the existing hole. By drilling a relief hole, it will lower the pressure of what is escaping now. Once the pressure is lower capping it will be easier (nothing is easy 5,000 feet below the surface of the ocean). Remember, at that depth sea pressure is about 2,300 pounds per square inch.

Yeah, But , they had to deal with the pressure when they hit that pocket in the first place, when the original well was dug, seems like, they could drill through the damaged part of the well thats already there instead of drilling a whole now relief well, ?

I'm certainly no expert, but when the original drilling was taking place, the casing or piping had devices that would shut off the flow as the drill was removed. Once the rig and associated piping sank, mangling much of the "infrastructure", coupled with the failed safety device, there is nothing there to salvage. The current temp fix is to make a clean cut on the piping so that another can be attached to it and contain, divert the flow. If this was all taking place in 200 feet of water, the leak would have been stopped within a day or two in my opinion.
