New strawbale garden

I finally decided it was not going to freeze again, so last week i put veggies in the haybale garden. No time to prep ground this year, and too much work to do.

So far tomatoes and peppers and some potatoes.

Usually my plants go through a slight shock when transplanted, but not this year. They seem to like their haybale home. No wilting or fading noticed at all. There has been a gentle rain falling all day and the plants look as healthy as two week old sets usually look.

Not much to see. 4 hay bales in a square with a center opening I filled with extra hay. got the potatoes planted in the middle.

I put plant food on the straw a week ago and let it soak in. Dug holes out of the hay and transfered the plants. Covered everything with manure and top soil mix.

We have had a drizzling rain all day today so the bales are good and soaked.

There is a ton of stuff on the internet about strawbale gardening. that is one of the reasons I decided to try it this year.

I had a good garden that went to pot last year. My wife died in June and I could not do much of anything for the rest of the summer. The neighbors took some of the produce but most just ruined.

I am going to put okra in the center too. I don;t think it will bother the potatoes any

6 tomatoes and two pepper plants. I am covered up at this point. All the plants are heavy with veggies. The potatoes are growing like crazy in the center.

We have been very wet this summer but it has come as short fast deluges complete with flooding. The bales allow good drainage to protect the plants but still retain moisture between the storms.

This is deffinately the way to establish a quick garden with zero prep time in a very small area.

I'd dig a ditch and channel some flood water your way but it would take a while for me to get to Glendale.
