Default Workhorse? Pack Mule? Nothing compares to a moose!

Sent to me via an email:

Only in Alaska....... This guy raised an abandoned moose calf with his horses, and believe it or not, he has trained it for lumber removal and other hauling tasks. Given the 2,000 pounds of robust muscle, and the splayed, grippy hooves, he claims it is the best work animal he has. He says the secret to keeping the moose around is a sweet salt lick, although during the rut he disappears for a couple of weeks, but always comes home.... impressive!

Years ago I found pictures in a book showing cavalry in one of the norwegian countries that were riding moose during WW1.Unfortunately,I can't remember what book.I thought it was a great idea. Can you imagine full gallop across muskeg?Try that with a horse. An added benefit would be if you had to eat your ''horse'' it really would be good eating. The only drawback would be if your moose took off hell bent for leather into thick bush. That would be one wild ride!

mitch, this is a unique picture of a workmoose. I saw a picture of a man riding a moose (always wondered where he found a saddle to fit it) and on TV I saw a woman milking a moose.

Probably the safest way to ride a wild moose... from the canoe in open water.

I saw a book about a family in Alberta, decades ago, that had a moose trained to move timber for them, used his antlers like a forklift. That workmoose would be about as good eating as a rubber boot by the way, one of his grandchildren maybe. that big boy gonna be some tough ol' meat.

Personally, I like them on the hoof, in the wild where they belong and six years old or less for a bull. Tender, mmmm...
some fella confronted me the other day and asked "What's your problem?" So I told him, "I don't have a problem I am a problem"

don't you know you can tenderize it by hanging it 6 weeks, beating it with clubs and then marinating it in draino?

I hate to burst your bubbles. The picture is a fake.

However, there are indeed moose being used, or used in the past, for pulling sleighs and logging. But not this moose.

I was going to mention the same thing about the fake moose

You guy's look close at the body of this critter, it isn't shaped exactly as any moose I've ever seen

The bodies to short to start with

    Great photo chop though...

Here is a great article that shows the picture is, indeed, a fake. It also includes some links to photos of moose in harness toward the bottom of the page. One even shows a guy riding a moose.

Here is one of a bizarre moose accident. An eerily similar thing occurred to me when I first started working. We were stringing aerial 1/4" strand and at some point a beagle stepped over the strand as we pulled it taught. The dog was chained to his dog house and we found both dangling in the air. The dog, unfortunately, did not survive the ordeal.
