    Cat family adopts baby squirrel

A house cat has formed an incredible mother-daughter bond with an injured squirrel, nursing the wounded critter back to health in a Colombian home.

Ruben Gaviria found the squirrel lying motionless at the base of a large tree 15 days ago, according to the El Colombiano newspaper.

The Envigado resident said he believed the squirrel had hurt itself falling from one of the branches and he took it to his home.

"It seemed like she that had fallen long ago and was cold," he was quoted saying.

At first Mr Gaviria was worried his pet cat and kitten would eat the animal, but to his amazement they quickly accepted it as family.

"I put the squirrel onto [the cat's] teat and since then the trust is total," he said.

"It's as if the animals have signed a truce."

The squirrel is left free to roam outside, where it often digs holes in Mr Gaviria's garden, but the trio reportedly reunite every day to play and sleep side-by-side.

Santa Fe Zoo feline expert Jose Bernardo Barreiro said the cat's unusual reaction to the squirrel could be due to its relationship with its owner.

"The cat is a pet, which has certainly been very fond of its owner and is very noble … so it saw the squirrel needed help and it provided," he said.

Mr Barreiro said he worried that the squirrel would attempt to befriend other cats in the wild.

"This case is an exception, wild animals like the squirrel should remain in the woods," he said.

Didn't post the pics as I didn't know if they'd load right, but they're on the link!

Maybe the cat thought, "I could eat it now....but if I wait 'til it's full grown...".

Would that remark perhaps be a variation of a sick one-liner directed at my profession?
