There's always cosmoline for weapons storage. Kind of a PITA to clean though. I'm sure some of the newer products available work as well without the intense clean-up.

True as that might be, (sometimes it's hard to tell, LOL) they actually sell the JIC, pistol gripped Mossberg, 12ga packed in a similar container, along with a Sucrets box type Survival Kit.

    http://www.gzanders.com/jic.pdf

Although they don't come right out a say it, it implies that you could bury, or stash some where and your stuff would be O.K after a length of time.

Unless you live in a dry temperate climate, you will find that unless you do use silica gel packs, heavy grease, vacuum packing, purging w/nitrogen, etc, your stuff is gonna get ruined.

And it doesn't matter if it's a 10/22 (popular survival option), food stash, or any other gear, just putting in a tube isn't gonna make it.

Note: How does one throw away, loaded 3-1/2 Mag Hevi Shot #4's, 12 ga with rusted brass, that you are afraid to shoot?

    LOL, I hear ya.
Actually I have been the recipient of unwanted ammo in the past, both form people that know I shoot, as well as a friend of mine that was on the bomb squad.

I would guess that if I called the bomb squad,.....no never mind, bad idea... he isn't on the squad anymore, retired in one piece, ...I'll just hang on to them.
I think that maybe everyone has stuff they really can't/won't throw away, won't use, don't really know what to do with, so just keep it till you croak, and someone else has to deal with it?

It was a case of storing them in a water tight ammo box, for a year, or from one duck season to another, that did the deed.
    Just an FYI.

P.S. I did hear about throwing in a piece of dry ice to "gasify off" and replace oxygen with CO2. Never tried it though.

I'd cut the shells open dump the shot for reloading. Pull the wadding and dump the powder (I am sure you can reuse or just do what the Coyote does?). Fire the primers in a safe gun a disguard? Just a thought...
Keep in mind the problem may be extremely complicated, though the "Fix" is often simple...

I personaly would go with Cowboysurvival's suggestion then use the hulls as match holders, there is a thread someplace about using the hulls of used shotgun shells for that purpose

Well that's cool beans. Another reason to hand carry spent shells out of the woods. Thanks! I missed this somewhere along the line.

I'm not sure I want to fool around unloading these.

Plastic shells have a real tight crimp, don't know if I want to mess with that.
Shot is "Hevi Shot", lot of problems reloading these to correct pressures, load info, etc.
Powder is a factory mix, also problems with load data, amounts.
Don't feel like cutting them open, too much work for little useful return, (ie. shot powder, etc.)
These hulls would be 3-1/2" don't have any dies, presses for these, and there is still the live primer problem, Yeah, I know I could fire them, or gently press them out (Not!).

I do reload 12ga, but mostly slugs (Lee 1oz mold) using the small "Lee Loader", gave my big press/dies, to my nephew to reload trap/sheet loads.

He shoot more targets then I do, and if I go shooting with him, I expect him to bring the shells ( I do think that he load blanks and gives them to me, 'cause he breaks more than I do, mostly)

Intresting link on use of hulls, Thanks.
The younger generation needs to know that one.

I always pick mine up, but how many match holders can you use?

I have several that are (I would have to look to be sure) 16ga,(I think, maybe 20ga?) slid into 12ga, froms a real good slid fit, as match cases, kits. (kinda a funny/Mr Dumas story here, maybe later?)

Got the idea 30+ years ago from the "Tips" section of "Outdoor Life", no interweb back then, had to go to the barber shop (remember them? guy thing) and read while you waited.
Thanks for the suggestions guys, might just come up with some thing.

This is gonna be one of those "hang on to them, let it eat at me till figure out what to do with them." things.
