Compact Fishing Pole

I really enjoy a nice dinner of fish when I'm out. In the summer, it's easy enough to build a fish trap and let them catch themselves. However, I still like to fish with a pole or rod and reel especially in colder weather when I don't want to get into the water. I can use a nice sapling and make pole but I was thinking about adding a compact/collapsible rod and reel to my pack for a little fun. Do any of you have one? If you do, what do you think of it?

I have 10 or so fly rod as will as spinning, they are great now but years ago they were very poorly made . Now you cannot tell the difference between them and a 2 pic rod . But you gone to have to pay for it . Cabalas has some good spinning rods at not to bad a price , but for fly rods will the sky is the limit on price

What I'm looking for is something compact. A 7-12 foot rod that collapses to 18-24 inches. I'm seen a bunch on the internet but I'm wondering if anyone on here uses one and if the brand they use is any good. Lot's of folks carry them for backpacking or kayaking.

We use 5 foot ultra light "unglysticks" as they are known. The ultra light is light enough to feel the lightest touch but i have cought 7 pound pike on these things. Some are collapsable. Instead of Cabelas, go to walmart or k-mart for your american folks. They have good quality rods for like 50 bucks and a small decent reel for $35. Have fun. May I recomend A large "PLUG" as they are known. They are mainly used for pike and muskie. They come flyingout of the water with the hook in the mouth. Boy thats fun.

They sell these at our Wal-mart for people going fishing for only a small time and not really in to it

they are very cheap but half decent, i got some for my trip to the boat in Spain and they worked nice.

So you want a spinning rod 4 or 5 piece with a line wt. 2 lb. to 8 lb. and lure wt 1/16 to 3/8 ..Ok G-Loomis , ST.Croix , Cabelas ,Shimano , Quantum , Fenwick , Are all good but be sure to go with Graphite or any Carbon-Fiber and not glass in the rod as you will louse too much of the fill of the line, And the more you pay for this rods the better the rod will fill . I have some very good rods and friends have given me a bad time about paying so much for my rods until they try them and then they have go out and get one because now they know what they have been missing . It's like having a an ugly girl and getting a Good one its hard to go back...

I had a buddy once that only dated bigger women. He said they always had scripts for diet pills and pills and beer were a cheap high.

Check this out! Coleman makes a collaspable fishing rod a bit larger than a pen, and that's just what it looks like! it comes with a very small spinning reel! Cost about 20 bucks!

I've seen those, Sarge. I just didn't know how well they would hold up. I may pick up one just to try it. It would make a good gear test.

I was in Wally's World yesterday and they have a Shakespeare Travel Mate for about $30. It comes in a big honkin' plastic box but the rod collapse for 4'6" to 12", which is pretty nice. It also comes with a reel. It's an ultra light rig but I'm looking at pan fish so it should be okay. I just need to toss the box and find a tube that I can store the rod in and attach to the outside of my pack.

Also.....they have a little plastic box called a Clip and Go. It's just about perfect for a mini survival kit. It isn't water proof but it is pretty durable. I found it in the fishing section, near the lures. They had a bunch of different plastic boxes there for fishing gear. It has a belt clip on the back and a 35mm film can just does fit it.

I'd definitely look into a pack rod if you do a lot of hiking or canoeing.

I have a great one. My bro-in-law bought it for me, years ago. It has a little case that contains the reel and sections of rod. I'd go look up the name but it doesn't matter. I've tried to get second one for my wife but have never been able to find another. I can't think of the name of it, right off, but it is a common make. They just don't seem to make this model of rod anymore.


I've only ever had luck with one collapsible. The rod sections were triangular. With the round ones - you can end up with a mess if you have a fish that is fighting. Eyelets get twisted around.
