Rattlesnakes + Dogs

I Went Out With A Few Friends From Work Last Sunday. One Of Them Brought His Dog Tank, A Little Mass Of Energy. A Good Dog..... Until He Saw His First Rattlesnake. He Kept Trying To Bite It But The Snake Kept Keeping Him At Bay. We Had An Issue Because Tank Was In Out Line Of Fire. So At Last I Booted Tank Away Hoping He Stay Away, Which He Didn't. So Before He Got Back To The Snake I Fired Several Rounds Of Snake Shot Into The Snake Killing It. Now, I Know It Was Only A Snake, But I Did Feel A Bit Bad. It Was Just Trying To Get Some Food Before It Got Too Cold. But I'd Rather Kill A Snake Than Watch A Dog Die. Here Are Some Pics Of Tank, And The Snake.

What kind of Rattler was it? was it a "Black tailed?

Great Basin Rattler, We Were Close To Him Before He Alerted. Probly A Bit Sluggish Due To How Cold It Was. And Just Before This Greg (Tanks Owner) Was Making Fun Of Mine And Brian's Snake Boots And Guards. Now Hes Buying A Pair

Not real familiar with that particular species,but I think you did the right thing. You must be in the West. I'm in Kentucky but have worked with snakes before. That is why my curiosity as to species. In your pic I couldn't see the tail,which is why I asked.

You can take your dog to rattle snake aversion training. They put a shock collar on it, and when it gets close to a snake, they shock the crap out of it, and the dog learns to never even get close. I still need to take my dog.

Its A Great Basin Rattler, Westerns Are Bigger. We Were Gonna Save The Skin But It Was Shredded Pretty Bad. And Tank Was Very Jumpy After The Encounter, We Think Hes Kinda Got It In His Head Now To Avoid Them. A Guy At Work Said You Can Get A Shot For Your Dog, That If They Do Get Bit It Gives You Longer To Get Them Treatment. Yeah, I Think That Is Mormon Tea, Saw A Lot Of Them Around. Has Anyone Ever Made Tea From It?

Is your dog a wire haired fox terrier? I had one named Major when I was a kid and he was a great odog. Very good for killing rats so maybe snakes too but it is not safe for dog to find out. Over here they have these little brown dogs for killing poisonous snakes. I dont know what breed they are, but they are very fast and kill cobras, kraits whatever. it is sad though because after 8 years or so they slow down and then the snakes win and dog dies.
i told one woman this bothers me, and she says "better dog die than baby", so O get the point.

I've had two dogs bit by rattlesnakes- neither one of them died. My vet told me, that 80% of dogs that are bit by rattlesnakes DO NOT DIE.

However, I would've shot the snake anyway- just because I don't like snakes...

What? Do you know how many mice that snake ate? The next time you're hit with a plague of mice don't go calling for help from any snakes, mister. They just might turn a deaf ear to you (deaf ear...snake....I slay myself)...
