Sorry for your and Mrs Cowboy's loss. It sounds as though you did the right thing. Often the right thing is the toughest.

having to put an animal down is by far one of the hardest decisions, my wife would mortgage the house to save one of our critters, i am a little more realistic, sometimes is better to be able to help many than to help one.
we put down our whippet 4 years ago and she still second guesses all the time if it was the right time and thing to do, i think so but she will always ask that question
so sorry about your loss, it is never easy when it is such a gentle soul

A neighbor hit a wild rabbit with his car. I brought it to a vet.

A found a robin with a broken wing in the backyard. I brought it to a vet.

And yes. I've brought 2 squirrels to a vet.

CS I am so very sorry to hear of the loss of a member of your family. I have never had horses although I wish I did but maybe when we retire...... I have lost other wonderful pets through the years some of which I had to make the decision to put down, I hated it and still wonder if maybe...... But I console myself in knowing as you do that I made the most humane decision I could... being part cherokee indian I truly believe that animals like people cross over to a better place when they die to a place of happiness and no pain or heartache, and when our time comes they will all be waiting for us at the "rainbow bridge" to help us complete our journey. My prayers are with you and the Mrs. May God smile upon you and give you peace.

I am sorry for your loss CS. You made the right decision by letting her go. I know that she will be greatly missed. If there is anything that I can do please let me know. I also consider you and Mrs. Cowboy my friends.

I just read this CS, and I am so sorry for your loss. An animal can be very close to the heart. She is feeling no pain anymore.

Thank you everyone. Magic will be missed. She's been a part of the family since 1996.

That 'ole gal was a trooper. She even lost an eye to glaucoma and never missed a beat. I've been around & owned horses for almost 30 years & this mare was very, very special. RIP Maj!
