Default Survival Haircut....& your attachment to looking good.

I have been cutting my own hair for about 12 years. I am not any GOOODER at it today than 12 years ago. It always looks awful, if you tried hard to make it turn out worse, you would fail. And where as I just finished butchering myself, and thinking, God that is gross; I thought about survival and how people in a survival situation people would not care how they looked.

But the more I mulled it over the the less sure I became of that hypothesis. So what do you think, in a SHTF event, how important do you think your appearance, your your teenage daughters appearance would be...? Or do NORMAL humans assign a priority to looking good.

Personally, I wouldn't care what I looked like. My survival would be my number one priority. I would do my best to keep my personal hygene on a daily basis but, I could care less about my hair.
Take only what you need, and leave the rest.

I say either cut it as short as you can(what I do now, I cut my own hair too) Or let it grow however long it grows before you decide to whack it off. (What I did when I was on the street.) just be careful it stays out of the way.

Let's see I've got my make-up stocked up and should be able to get by for about a year, my hair I can cut and it doesn't look to bad, clothes I would go for comfort and I've got that covered. Shoes, I've got 45 pairs of those so I somewhat have that area covered. Hmmmm, I think I may be able to get by and not scare to many people off. Then again. Running to stock up on more make-up.

Not to go all psycho babble on you but that is a tier on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. It's up a couple of notches but as long as the basics are covered then, sure.

You could argue where it fits best, Love/Belonging or Esteem, but how we feel about ourselves certainly plays into how important we view our own survival. If we look into a mirror and do not like what we see how hard will we fight to survive. Conversely, if we like what we see then we will work that much harder.

Hope - in the scenario that you pose, and in addition to Rick's comments another factor about appearance may become very important. Interaction with others. Do you need to have a more clean-cut, trustworthy look to accomplish what you need to, or make the alliances that you seek to make? Or do you need to have a more menacing persona that shouts "don't mess with me"? How you look is important to both you personally, but also to others depending on what you want to accomplish, and how you choose to accomplish it.

From past experience, being in the field for many months at a time, hygene was the issue. Keep the hair as short as you are able, keep as clean as possible under the circumstances (stink less than the next guy was the goal) and keep what clothes you have as clean as possible . I would base all decisions on hygene since it would also equal one phase of staying healthy.

As short as I keep my hair it would take quite awhile to be an issue but I always keep a vanity mirror close at hand and not just for distress signals if you know what I mean....man I'm one good looking anglo-saxon! );o

Pal hit on the healthy part. Failure at hygiene will not only get you two of the three lice but a host of fungus rot. Remember, your skin is the largest organ of the body and it has to be maintained to remain healthy. I think there are a LOT of reasons to be concerned about how you look.

I would think having shorter hair would be more hygenic I would also want to look as mean and ugly as possible for sure. That may avoid a few fights maybe but not all I guess cause there is always someone bigger uglier and meaner.

HAIR, that's a good one. Now just something to kinda dull the shine. Personal cleanliness is important in how I feel besides the health issue. Beard sure helps if kept short weather wise and does cover up a fair amount of ugly.
