Yeah, I simply dipped the match heads in some melted wax. They worked just as well as the ones you can buy at retail stores.

Lorna - apparently I didn't. There are a few threads on them, but here's my take. Some do as Ken has done, dipping the head in wax. Others use nail polish to dip the heads. Both methods work - to a point (more about that in a second). With the wax dipped matches you may need to scrape the wax off with your finger nail. You can still light them without doing that, but I've noticed for me (maybe it's the hot weather) I have better results by scraping the heads first. The way that I do it is to dip the entire match in wax. The reason for this is because of a little test I did. I dipped just the heads - then dropped the matches in a pan of water. Did the same thing with matches that were completely coated. What I found (left them in water for about an hour) is that water wicked through the match stick and the heads got wet with the group that only had the head dipped. The matches that were completely coated worked just fine. Now, I realize that matches probably won't be subjected to that kind of extreme, but you never know........

Yep, dip the whole match in wax, 100% coated. Put in ziplock baggie, then in waterproof canister, like a film container (35mm).

Lock N Lock containers, used for geocaching, also have an indented rubber seal going around the whole rim, so they make a good seal. There's a reason why they are a favorite of geocachers. They keep stuff dry in the rain. Not sure if the Lock N Locks are rated for underwater use but you might try it.

Lorna, the methods listed here work just fine; I'll just add this: "Strike Anywhere Matches" are the best for this. I melt some paraffin in a double boiler method, slide the cover off of a box of 250 ct. strike-anywhere large kitchen matches and then place the open box on an old pie pan. I then pour the melted paraffin over the whole box and, after it solidifies, replace the lid. Whenever I need any I simply pry several out of the block. They work great.

I melted the paraffin in the microwave and dropped strike anywhere matches in the melted paraffin then placed them on aluminum foil to dry. Then I just dropped them in a match safe. If you carry a multi tool then pull out the file when you need to strike one. It's perfect for removing the wax and igniting the match. Just strike the match on the file.

IMHO you can't beat the lifeboat matches! Water proof and the flame is super hot and powerful. Best matches $ can buy imho
