    Default Fids

Years back, I probably spliced miles of line ("rope" to you landlubbers) including splices to stainless steel cable and other things. I had a Marlin Spike knife for this work. (Wonder if my ex still has it? )

One essenial tool for such rope work is a fid, an integral part of every marlin spike knife. If you want to make your own fid, here's a good site with instructions on how:

I've got a couple of Navy issure marlin spike folders around someplace. I think I know where they are (storage) - one of these days I'll have to look.

You may call it "rope" but you still think of it as "line", don't you?

I do. If it's on a boat, it's line. No such thing as rope on a boat........soap on a rope is another matter entirely.

i use fids all the time to make the gang line, neck and tug lines for my sled dog tow line system. i use aluminum ones, not the cheap plastic ones, they seem to work much better. i am not familiar with the tool you reference though

So, is that Spike knife just a blade, a screwdriver and a fid?

Just a blade and a fid. No screwdriver. That's a "ring."
