Dear People,

A quick email before the holidays…

As of last week, I threw caution to the wind and signed with the Discovery Channel for a new series on survival skills. This drama had been ongoing since June so it was good to get completion. Below, I’ve included a letter I wrote while airborne after a New York City meeting regarding the show for those who care to read it. I’m not able to answer any questions about the show per heinously complicated, page after page, horribly bias legal contract, so please forgive my sealed lips. Everything that I can share will be in future emails.



I’ll have new time commitments with filming around the globe, so please be patient and realize I’ll get back to you as soon as possible when I return from the field.

To Whom It May Concern,

Teaching survival skills has been my passion and my profession for a very long time. I take this lifestyle choice seriously and strive to give the very best training to my students both in and out of the field. I live my profession, and continuously refine my self-reliant homestead to embody the most effective combination of ancient and modern technologies designed to do more with less. I am acutely aware that my training may some day help decide a student’s fate during a real survival scenario. Unfortunately, even many so-called survival instructors are not burdened by this all important responsibility, (let alone television producers) and over the years, I’ve witnessed hundreds of examples of crappy or flat out dangerous instruction.



Please know that I have little if any control over how Dual Survivor is ultimately concepted, produced, and edited. While all production work involves the efforts of many talented individuals, very few if any of the players involved with this show have any experience in outdoor survival skills. So what happens when “city slickers” design an outdoor survival show? Only time will tell.



I have and will try my best to make the show as authentic and professional as possible – while still being fun to watch! I have and will continue to push this agenda personally and professionally, using the talent and clout of an entertainment attorney as well to further these wishes. Regardless of my efforts – as my grandmother used to say – “whatever will be will be.”



It’s in the spirit of educated hope, faith, and trust that I enter this project; knowing full well that compromises will have to be made. To my students, and somewhat to the readers of my books, you know my training far more intimately than any TV show could portray. It’s to my students that I give undying gratitude. These hearty souls have bothered to get off of their butts and follow me into the mountains and deserts over the years, come what may; desiring to know the truth about survival skills. Decades of students have helped me to achieve a level of competency, “dirt time”, and stark honesty that can never be bought or faked. Thank you!



In short, watch the show, laugh, and learn a survival trick or two. But…never, ever base your emergency preparedness plan on a television show.

I'm confused (happens a lot). You've posted a couple of emails from Cody. Were they to you? Are you involved with the show? Please explain the point of your post rather than post a couple of emails.

You think you are confused? I thought it was going to be a "one man show" and I knew Dave Canterbury was chosen. So now I find out it is going to be a "Two seater"? Well it has got to be better than their last efforts(I hope. For the "Stars" sakes, If it is a bad show it will hurt their credibility some).

I wouldn't take this guy too seriously, he's long since deleted his "intro" post. I think he's one we had problems with in the past. :cool2:

Moirlend - a little explanation in your original post may have gone a long way in resolving any confusion. At least in my case it would have.

I don't think you're a troll, just that you have some problems, especially with me. However, lately, I've been "out-gunned" on banning people by Crash & Rick...they're a lot quicker than me, so I'm not the only one to worry about. Also, if you even START to troll this site you'll be banned so quick you won't know what hit you & you're offensive crap will be sent away or deleted outright.

I agree with Crash, you should have given a short intro/explanation of what was up at the beginning. It would have avoided confusion. As for people who delete their posts, well, I think that's just downright childish & don't take them seriously after they do that. Based on you're earlier stuff I think you're a bit on the paranoid side & are "anti-social" as well as dis-respectful of the rules that the forum owner has laid down & can't handle it; but then that's your right. :cool2:

They are both right about the explanation. I started to edit your post because Cody's web site was listed then realized he wasn't the one that posted so I put it back in. A short explanation would have helpful.

Do you receive a newsletter/email from Cody? I'm just wondering how you're getting the emails.

My friend down here, Giuliano, gets these same e-mails form CL, it's part of a mailing list he maintains. Giuliano speaks fluent English and has corresponded personally with CL in the past. I think that is a nice thing for CL to do, he seems like a decent guy.

The basic premise of the new show, from what I could gather, is that they plan to film Cody and Dave Canterbury in a variety of locations and see what they come up with. The producers were looking for two people with radically different personalities and styles when it comes to survival. I hope both these guys dig in their heels if the producers start to have them do stupid stuff. A show like this could go either way. Mac

I appreciate the post, and I suppose a brief explanation would have been helpful for some.

It sounds to me like Cody is preparing everyone for the inevidable circus act a show like this in America will no doubtedly become.

Hopefully it's not a bunch of hype, but real world stuff that can be used with confidence. I get so tired of hearing about all this survival, wilderness living stuff and then at the end there's a big disclaimer saying "don't try this at home" or "use at your own discretion" or "don't blame me if you get sick, aquire hantavirus or poke your eye out". If people are gonna post or offer advice for this kinda stuff it should be real world stuff that can be used for prolonged periods without risk of serious health disorders or injury. The last thing you want in a survival sitiuation is a bad case of the hershey squirts or to be ingesting water that will cause your body not to be able to absorb oxygen.

If there are dangers with a practice then those dangers should be pointed out and remedies to those dangers should be included. Otherwise, the information is useless.


I guess what has got me thinking this way is the whole thing about aquiring potable water in the wilderness without store bought gadgets. So many people have videos, blogs, books and recommendations, but I doubt very much that any of them have proven these methods to be safe.

edit: I doubt very much most of these methods are safe...period.

My problem isn’t necessarily with you, it with how some of you treat new people that come to this site. Some people come here that are clueless and before they get a chance to learn something you have people giving them a hard time simply because they are clueless. Then instead of them sticking it out they leave and stay clueless in some case’s.
If your thinking that when I joined I was given a hard time then you would be wrong. I lurked long enough to know what was and wasn’t allowed on the site, I’ve just seen you and some other give new guys a hard and thought it wrong. I really think you need to give new guys a chance get over their misconceptions about wilderness survival and prepping. I know some of you get tired of the same old question and you think people need to use the search function more, but you need to realize that this may be somebody first internet forum and don’t know the in’s and out of a site like this. I had been using the internet since 99 and this was first time that I ventured onto an internet forum and there are thing you need to learn about site like this.

Now as far has me being dis-respectful of the rules of the forum, I’ve only broken the rule twice that I’m aware of. Once was when Crash asked a question that in my opinion could only be answered by breaking the forum rules.

In my opinion the topic was fine as long as somebody did actually try and answer the question. When my post got deleted I decided that this wasn’t the type of site that I wanted to contribute a lot too. I then decided finish what you started and went about deleting the rest of my post. Was it petty and childish yeah but we all have our bad days.
The only other time that I have broken the forum rules was when I temporally hijacked a thread.

Oh and when it come to your statement about banning me the minute I step out line, I don’t really care. I don’t post enough on this site or any other for a ban to effect me one way or the other.

I don’t know why I received the email. The only thing that I can guess is I was added to his email list when I email him a question concerning knots. As far as a shot explanation goes hind sight is 20/20, and I forget how random posts get scrutinized on this site.

I don't know that we scrutinize that closely. I guess it depends on which side of the curtain you are on. We do keep a close eye on spammers and try to make certain everyone adheres to the rules. Beyond that, I think we're pretty lenient. If we didn't then we'd wind up with a forum loaded with spam and with posts from folks only registering because they have a product to sell. Then the forum is of no benefit to anyone.

Ok I am a "regular" on a couple of Forums, so I kinda' know where you are coming from. I hope you'll pardon me for deleting most of the points in your post that seem personally involved. I do want to address some of the points that are general not specific. I am somewhat of a fence straddler here. I can see both sides. I know what you are talking about, about first posts needing / having to be done in the intro section. On some other sites I have seen references to "Intro Nazi's". I am kinda' understanding what you are talking about. But it is almost like being in a restaurant and someone you don't know "Butting in" and saying what they want about your conversation. I think in "Normal everyday society" we would all consider that "Rude". When we meet someone there we usually introduce ourselves first, right? If someone does this in public I usually "politely" point out their rudeness by introducing myself. That is usually all it takes and they then introduce themselves. I think this should cover pretty much most of the top half of the parts of your post I quoted.

I know if I go to your house, I must abide by your "House rules", whether it's no smoking, taking your shoes off at the door,putting drinks on Coasters only, etc. That is being respectful of you and your house. It seems that people think that the same does not apply to the 'Net though. You go somewhere you abide by their rules or you leave. Yes some others rules are possibly peculiar, BUT they are THEIR rules,period.
Like you this is/was my first Forum. I just did what I thought I should do when I meet someone(anyone) for the first time. I've never had a problem. I haven't been here all that long,although I have a lot of posts for the amount of time I have been here. Call me "Wordy" if you will(I do). I have had one or two "Heated debates" and have been politely warned by the mods to be careful. I heeded their advice. I've even met 2 of them in real life. They are pretty cool people. Although it isn't "Their" house they "Work for" the person whose house it is,as such they have certain guidelines that they must follow as per their "employers" guidelines.(They don't get paid anything) I think they have been lenient in almost all the posts I have seen. Sometimes I "Lurk" myself,sometimes I only sign in to check PM's and look at something I can't see when I am "Lurking". However by Lurking I can see more Topics easier,which is why I "Lurk". I do this on almost all Forums I am on. Anyway I digress.
When I see someone that may take a "Go to the introduction Section" post wrong I try and Pm that individual or say something sorta' mellow to take out any perceived sting out of that type of "Mod Post" to a new individual. I guess kinda' like I am trying to do here as I can see both sides points.

Like Rick says, nowadays we usually only go after Spammers. We delete inflammatory posts, & it's only rarely that we ban members, unless they keep on with their nonsense. Also, if they follow our instructions, they wouldn't stay clueless. "Sticking it out," as you say, is an important ingredient to survival. On the flip side, posters like "theFreakinBear, & others of his ilk, are NOT welcome here. We don't apologize for that.

That is exactly why we attempt to direct them on how to do it. Some are too sensitive to accept the least amount of instruction. If you know how to change people via the internet, please instruct us & we'll start using it.

How have we used the rules to keep you off of this site? All we would have to do is ban you, which we haven't done. However, since we started deleting the problem parts of posts, we've found that, for the most part, we don't even have to do that. I'd of thought you would surely see the wisdom in that.
