Sarge - I took more of a survival training school approach. Here is a basic outline.
Beginner Course
Length of course: 3 days, two nights
Environment: Wooded, easy to moderate terrain
Weather: Not in my hands
Season: Late Spring, Summer, Early Fall
Equipment: Each student will be provided with basic camping equipment
Supplies: A wide variety of foods will be provided
The beginner course will place an emphasis on:
1. Keeping a positive mental attitude
2. First Aid
3. Building simple shelters
4. Fire Craft
5. Locating and making it safe to drink
6. Signaling
7. Acquiring food
8. Knot tying and lashing
9. Introduction to topo maps and compass
The intermediate course of instruction would be one full week and build upon the skills listed in the beginner course.
1. Keeping a positive mental attitude
2. Advanced First Aid
3. More complex shelter construction
4. Advanced Fire Craft
5. Advanced Water acquisition
6. Signaling
7. Tracking, trapping, hunting, advanced wild edibles
8. Intermediate orienteering skills
The advanced coursed of instruction would vary in length and be climate specific.
1. Dessert survival
2. Mountain Survival
3. Tropical Survival
4. Open Ocean Survival
5. Winter Survival
