    Default mental preparedness

i know alot has been said about this here topic but i a going a specific direction with this.
my training has gone leaps and bounds latley in the area of animal procurement, funny in a way but it is so easy to go to the store and buy a big ole juicy steak or some chicken and eat it with no problem. but put some folks in the bush and hand the a rabbit or fish and so first kill it the eat it, that is hard for me to do, i as most of you know rehab allot of wild critters and rescue domestic animals so killing is hard for me. I have been able to skin my own food lately and it still amazes me that although i am sad at the death of any animal once the skin is off i see it in a totaly different manner it is no longer a cute animal any more it is now a life sustaing substanance i do not see a fish or rabbit all i now see is dinner, amazes me how skin makes that difference. makes me think...

I was raised in a hunting family so to me there isnt the, its cute attraction. We were thought not to make pets of any animal that wasnt allowed in the house. and that was pretty much just dogs and cats.
I Wonder Who was the first person to look at a cow and say, "I think I'll squeeze these dangly things here, and drink what ever comes out?"

I am an animal lover (no not like that!). That being said, when I hunt, fish or trap a critter, I don't think of it as this cute cuddly. I admire it's splender and ability to survive in it's enviroment. Then I thank Gaia for the bounty that I will be able to partake of, and the animal for it's sacrifice. I guess it is a matter of how you look at the world as a whole.
    I know what hunts you.

i still have a hard time with trapping, wish i could seperate myself more, but to me drowing is a ****ty way to go.with all the wild animals i have rescued and rehabed i have seen them experience fear and happiness. but i am also a person who feels the need to be able to kill what i eat. to many folks are so far removed from the food processing that if they had to kill their own food there would be alot more vegetarians in the world, my respect to all those who can humanly harvest thier own food this is a skill i am slowly learning

I have no problem with animals that we hunt. But we raise, hogs, cows and chickens for meat. When it comes time to butcher, at times I have a hard time with it. I learned as a kid not to get too close to farm animals, but it is still a hard thing for me to do. Like WE said, once it is skinned, and being processed, it is not the same animal, it's now food.

The fact that it bothers you just tells me that you are human. I think that it is good that you acknowledge that the animal gave it's life so that you could sustain yours. The native americans did this because they respected the game that they had just taken.
If it didn't bother you I would say that you had no heart at all.
Take only what you need, and leave the rest.

I agree about the trapping. Been there, done that, just don't like doing it. As far as critters, aawwwww...they are so cute and fun to watch. Could do it all day. If'n I'm hungry and I see one of them thar cute cuddly critters...............diner time.

    Food first, cute cuddly second.

I have lived in the southern part of Louisiana my entire life. I grew up eating squirrels, rabbits, deer, turtles, frogs, crawfish, fish, shrimp, just about everything that has something to offer. About the only thing I havent eaten around here is oposum and armidillo. I raised chickens while growing up and cut their throats, and plucked them and cleaned them for the freezer for food. Animals in the wild are given respect to the point of death. When you take them for food, it is done with respect also. If you were to kill an animal and let it go to waste, then you not only do harm to the animal, but to your own future and the future of your children and theirs. Many people these days do not realize the reprocussions of wasteful actions nor do they have the respect for nature that they should. I can see, with this failing economy, that people are going to find hard times and hopefully, come to realize where respect has it's place in wastefulness. People in need will finally see what their Grandparents were talking about when they thanked God for every meal and respected the Earth that provided it! If people would look back to the old days, they will see a way out of this bad economy, through hard work and determination. If not, they will sit there waiting for Obammy to save them, and the economy will collapse until their is nothing left to take, so there will be nothing left for the government to give, and the only survivers will be those who WILL WORK FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR FAMILIES!!!
OK, this is getting into another subject, so I will stop here.

Way back when..., I had a hog that I hand raised. Her name was Petunia(a spotted poland china). That hog would follow me all over the place like a puppy (a really big puppy as she got older). One day my uncle said it was time to kill her. Needless to say I was not very happy. I told uncle I should never have made friends with her. He said that was crazy. If I had not been her friend she would have had no one and died alone. As it was she lived a happy life and died with her friend at her side. It only made me feel slightly better.

I am opposed to murder but have no problem killing.

    1. If it's in your kit and you don't know how to use it....It's useless.
    2. If you can't reach your kit when you need it....Its useless.

The first time I killed a chicken, plucked it and cut it up I couldn't eat
any meats for weeks. My late father-in-law raised all our pigs so when
butchering time came he stayed in the house until it was time to start
the sausage grinding. None of that bothers me any more but I was raised
around. I can see where it would bother some who weren't. When you
get hungry it will get easier.

This thread has so far, centered on killing an animal for food, which is all good if you have nothing else to eat. What about other mental preparedness? This is what I would look for in a person with whom I would team up with in an extreme emergency.

    - Ability to find something positive in a bad situation. You cut your finger off? Well you won't get splinters in that one anymore!

    - Ability to deal with stress, whether through wittling, talking to plants, or yelling at the sky. When you come back to the house, leave the stress behind.

    - Ability to be calm when most people would panic, like if the roof of the shed caved in, or you cut off a finger.

    - Ability to improvise.

    - Ability to learn new things. Not everyone knows everything, but some people sure know a lot. Know when to know you don't know as much as you thought you knew.

    - Last but not least, they should know some survival skills, but all the above fundamental attributes are more important.

You can teach a calm man, but not a crazed/panicked man.
