Here is a Flint n Steel kit that I put together, The arrow head is the striker and could be used as point, gig, cuting tool. Also some fungus in with the char cloth as a coal extender. Hope you like.

I like that you could pile your shavings on the lid. The biggest challenge with magnesium flakes is getting them to pile up nicely on a wad of dead prairie grass. This solves that problem in style.

The biggest challenge with magnesium flakes is getting them to pile up nicely on a wad of dead prairie grass.

I personally never carry a magnesium fire-starter block Like the Doan's. I think they're to heavy. But I've had students that wanted to use them, and they encountered the the same problem. You can use small shells, cut a small piece of bark from a fallen tree, or even cut a small piece of branch with your knife and make a shallow hole. all will let you make a small pile of magnesium flakes. I've showed them that you can even use a Acorn top or even the Acorn itself. Any type of nut split in half will work.
