Default Could someone make an ordered list of knife steels?

I know a little about steels but nothing close as to what I would like to. Could someone, or the forum in collaboration, create an ordered list as to the best steel for knifes? Let's get into detail too, rather than just "stainless" or "carbon" steel. Numbers and acronyms, people!

(and for people who'll inevitably say "it depends on your use": let's say the use will be a 3-9" blade length, hardwood bushcraft, game cleaning, multipurpose. Let's also assume the user knows how to take care of the knife, be it in wet or dry conditions)

Is this in reference to you forging your own? If it is, a good steel that you can pick up cheap is old leaf springs off of pick up trucks, you could pick it up at any old scrap yard for pretty cheap, the steel is 5160. It makes very durable blades, and can be hardened to around 60 HRC.

Not so much myself forging, but when I'm asked to recommend knives or steels I could only explain so much because I didn't know all the various types. I knew about AUS-8 and 1095 and CarbonV but now I feel much better about what I recommend. I also realized there are some powerful stainless steels, which is causing me to rethink my "carbon steel over everything" mentality. That article Crash linked to was perfect.

    Try this, it's Joe's updated version (2002):
