    Default Cooking Breakfast

Many here have cooked in a variety of ways while camping. Methods vary - fancy camp cookware, old beat up cookware, titanium, aluminum, stainless, coffee cans, tin foil, sticks.......here are a couple of recipies that are kind of fun.

Bacon & Egg in a Paper Bag

    3 thick slices of bacon
    1 egg
    1 paper lunch bag
    1 stick

Place bacon in the bottom of the bag, covering the bottom. Crack egg and put in bag on top of the bacon. Fold top of bag down securely. Poke a hole through the top of the bag for the stick. Hold over the hot coals till cooked.

    Cooking Eggs

Cut an orange in half. Remove the pulp. Try not to tear the peal. Crack an egg open and put into orange peel. Set peel filled with egg onto a bed of coals. The moisture from the orange peel will cook the egg. Add salt & pepper.

Well if the first doesn't work you can always substitute the paper bag for a piece of folded aluminum. Same weight (about), same pack size, and aluminium is reusable

It works. I've done it. The trick is coals, not flames.

I did the paper bag breakfast when I was in scouts some 38 years ago. I think i'll try the orange peel, could you use a grapefruit peel instead?

I'm just wondering how long that bag will hold up. I tend to pack on the bacon in the morning. Figure a heavy soggy mess could tear it asunder

Sarkey - grapefruit should work just fine as they also have a high moisture content.

Mitch - that's why the 1st post said 3 slices of bacon. I doubt a paper bag would hold up well with half a pig in it.

Put some ground duck in there and you would have duck al' orange.

Default A new bag breakfast. . .or lunch!

Actually Stairman, Bacon (or sausage) and eggs in a paper bag works very well and is very tasty! "YOU MUST USE A BROWN PAPER LUNCH BAG" All others WILL fall apart. I have experimented with the white deli bag, etc. and the bottoms came un-done and they fell apart

Although I wouldn't recommend putting the eggs in the bag before the bacon (or sausage) is cooked 1/2 to 3/4 of the way through. Why, you might ask?

Well, putting them in before cooking the meat, the eggs will make the bag soggy and prevent the meat from cooking properly. The grease from the meat saturates the bag (as it cooks) and keeps the bag from burning and/or falling apart and the grease gets hot (on the bag) and helps cook the eggs better and more evenly.

It is best to cook over a hot bed of coals rather that the flames of the fire. While it can be done over the flames, you really have to watch to make sure that you don't catch the bag on fire or burn the meat in one spot from the direct flame.

Haven't tried the orange peel method, but it sounds like it would be a good one!

I took a wilderness survival class last year, and there was a lady in the class that did the orange/egg trick. I thought it was a clever way to use what you had. An orange and 2 eggs for breakfast, while I was eating 2 packs of instant oatmeal...

Crash is right, It does work. I learned that in cub scouts back in the 70s. We did it a little different with a Y shaped stick, papper bag, and only cooked bacon. But closing the bag and adding an egg is a great idea.

    Talking Hmmm.....

Heard of a "bag lunch" before; but a "bag brunch?" Anyway, that Orange peel bit is published in my older Scout manuals under "cooking without utensils". However, if'n you all don't mind, I still prefer my cast-iron skillet. Nice post Crash!
