    Default Vanilla crisis

Might want to stock up on vanilla before the price sky rockets.

Don't worry hope, I doubt that there is any real vanilla in that French Vanilla creamer. They can make "natural vanilla flavor" out of almost anything.

Does anyone know the expiration date on vanilla? I've got 3 32oz bottles of the good stuff from Mexico. Not sure when they expire tho? Prolly a few years I suppose.?

Found this when I queried the shelf life of vanilla, hope it helps

The folks at Nielsen-Massey Vanillas (whose goal, admittedly, is to sell more and more vanilla) say you can keep properly stored vanilla extract for four or five years. Proper storage, they add, implies a tight seal and room temperature.

Went and looked at the vanilla in my kitchen (real, not imitation) has a best if used by date 2 years from now, so probably will last quite a bit longer.

About ten years ago my folks were in Ecudor and brought me back a quart of real vanilla.(?). In the interim we've used - hmmm, maybe a third of a cup.

Wonder if this stuff ever goes bad?

I'm betting it will last at least 10 years.

The vanilla bean is the seed of an orchid, and orchids are easy to grow indoors. But VERY difficult to make them bloom. I should know, I had a phalenopsis orchid. I spent probably $200 on special grow lights, fertilizers, and setups which I made myself, and probably around 50 hours just learning the basics of growing an orchid and making it flower. Phal's are supposed to be one of the easy ones too.

If you're going to seriously make your own vanilla, it's going to be a full-time hobby with a special climate-controlled enclosure to control temperature and humidty. Orchids need steady temps, with high humidity in general.
