Fun with Handi rifles....

Last week brought two new H&R Handi Rifles home.

A 7mm-08 and a .280 rem.
The 7mm-08m was a youth model with shorter stock...and a low comb...suitable for open sights (High comb Monte Carlo stock are hard to get your eye down on open sights and shotguns.)....with a 22" barrel makes a real compact rifle.

The .280 has a 26" barrel (?) and had a 3X9 Bushnell Banner scope (about a $100 buck scope...advertised as a dawn to dusk light gathering scope)

I was heading out to see my gunsmith guy... to fit a .308 barrel (previous purchase) on the .223 receiver also previous purchase) was going to build a "NATO package...LOL"...., but tried the .308 barrel on the new receiver.... as it turns out clips on the 7mm-08 receiver like it was made for it ....(still gonna have my guy check it out the fit).

Then took off the scope from the .280 and mounted it on the .308 set up........so now it is a .308 youth (kinda like the shorter stock..)

Next trip out to "The Place" and my rifle range....have a couple new set up to try out.

I guess it's a good ting to have options.....

I was just noting yesterday that the wind has died down from what I had decided was a permanent straight line tornado force around here.

So the wind is gone, temps are high enough that I will not freeze my butt to the shooting bench, but not so hot as to be a danger and we are down to rain only every two or three days.

I guess I can go shooting too.

But I have a problem. I swapped a couple of scopes out during the winter and I have forgotten what I put where and I built a last minute AR and since they all look alike I don't have a clue to which ones are zeroed and which ones are only bore sighted. Old age I suppose.

That means I might have to shoot everything I own just to make sure the scopes are zeroed.

What's the total on the number of handi-rifle barrels now Hunter?

I got my own system messed up with purchase of both H&R and Rossi Gear. Since H&R shut down the extra barrel program Rossi combos are getting hard to find too, and the prices are out the roof!

I'm with you on the Handi Rifles, I love mine!! I thought long and hard on a scope for mine until I shot it. I'm afraid that 325 grain bullet spittin out the other end would impale a scope in my skull. Before next deer season though, I do want to replace the standard site with a ladder style.

Well in answer to the question.....
1) First NEF/H&R was a 12 slug shot gun.
11) First project....First Handi with the idea I was going to build a .270 for deer hunting.....
So started as a .243 (scoped), then added the .270 (scoped), 45/70 .50 cal in line ML.....The shotgun barrels..12 ga w/chokes, 16ga. 20ga., .20 ga rifled bull (scoped), 28ga. and .410/45 lc combo....add a versa-pak .22 rim fire (rare w/sights)

6) Second project was built on a .204 receiver......added .30-30 (sights), 357(sights), .35 Whelan fitted from the factory.......then added 30-06 (scoped) and .35 Rem. barrels......

1) Handi .223......
2) Handi .44 mag the added a .45 lc carbine, that was reamed to .454, and 460
1) Handi from the southland .500s&w
1) Handi for one of our members 35/55 target special
1) Huntsman .58 ML
2) Handi youth 7mm-08 and .308.(scoped)
1) Hand 280 long barrel(?)
Not Handi's but .....
3 )Sportster Rim fire .22lc, 22mag, 17 HMR (scoped)
1) 10ga....Long Tom 32" barrel The I dare ya gun.

I get 31 but I may be forgetting something....LOL

Speaking of the .280 Remington, I have been a big fan since 1962 when I bought a new Remington 725 in .280 Remington. I've killed elk, R.M. Mule deer, Cailf. Mule deer, Blacktail deer, antelope, and Black bear with it. Not to mention numerous coyotes and ground squirrels. Started handloading for it in1965, but that Remington factory 150 grains PSP Core-lokt bullet would put an animal on the ground with alacrity and dispatch. It is extremely accurate, too.

I own and have owned quite a few other rifles and calibers, but that .280 Remington is still my favorite "go-to" rifle.
