    Cool Rotow?

The ones that we get on here that want to run off into the woods to live forever need to study this guy! He survived for 30 years!

Maybe not the best example....as it already seems the idea of stealing gear and supplies and mooching off others be it hunting, trapping fishing, shelters....and using the land....Is the heart of the question.

"Hi, I'm new, and want to know where I can run away into the woods and "survive", for free....as I don't like to be told what to do, and want to live off the grid?"

When I was a kid....I was told this was just thievery.....

    Sorry Sarge, Bad Example........LOL

I have empathy for a mental disorder. I think maybe mandatory treatment would have been reasonable.

BUT. Nobody knew what type of person/persons were breaking and entering, stealing their supplies, and violating their peace of mind.

He's lucky he didn't get shot.

I remember when Eric Rudolph was running around our summertime neck of the woods for years evading all kinds of LEOs. Not exactly a great thought running in the back of your head in the woods. A bomber and "survivalist" (Well, until he got caught eating out of a dumpster in Robbinsville.)

That was the point! It's not going to be the romantic,Idyllic, thing that the young 'uns think that it's going to be. No way to build a permanent structure, plant a garden, live off wild edibles year around; don't like people? What kind of society will be thrust into when you go to jail? Something to think about....

I just read his story, and I get the feeling that he just did anything he could to survive because he did not have the true skills to live off the land. But even if he had those skills, it would have been a rough go of it.
I do have a lot of respect for him because even though he was a thief, he still had it tough in the winter, and few people I know could have lasted as long as he did.
If he would have learned to hunt with a bow and arrow, and developed more skills that would of allowed him to quit stealing, he might have been there for the rest of his life.
It seems he just tried to do it the easy way and that was his downfall! Thing is doing it the right way without stealing is such a hard thing to do, most people have no idea how difficult it is to just live off the land. It is probably the hardest thing you could ever do!

A bit off topic here but two or three years ago, in Utah, there was a criminal "survivalist" thief running around out in the mountains, breaking into and trashing remote cabins, stealing things to "survive," and threatening people. He was known to be armed and very dangerous.

Does anyone here know if the cops ever caught that cretin?? If so, somehow I missed the story of his capture and subsequent trial.

Just didn't anyone to get the idea that wilderness survival involves squatting, and being a thief....

Thanks, Rick. I missed that. Glad the cops caught him and he is in prison for a long time. I despise a thief.

I just cannot get past the idea that there are humans past the age of 18 who still believe in "Wilderness" as it existed prior to the 17th century. Where does that concept originate? 50 years ago when I was in high-school it was painfully obvious that it did not matter what continent or ocean you were in with the success of the satellite system and jet transportation that was not a single square foot of Earth that had not been "surveyed, photographed or flown over"

I think that part of the problem with run off and survive off the land folks is that they usually don't have the work ethic it takes to truly build the skills needed. So, they are going to have to resort to taking from others. Which is probably why they wanted to run off in the first place. Everybody in their life got tired of them always taking and cut them off.
