Waiting for the Brown Truck

Once again I find myself sitting at the computer, sipping coffee and waiting for the arrival of the big brown truck.

The tracking info says it is to be delivered today and signature is required so I am stuck here until it arrives. No trip out for burgers, icecream, parts for repairs or moon pies allowed.

I guess I could mow the lawn, but that seems a little too much like work and it's not Thursday yet. We don't work around here until Thursday and must knock off by noon Friday!

Being retired and waiting for Big Brown is just like Christmas morning. By the time it gets there you've forgotten what you ordered so there's a surprise in every box.

Well the guy arrived and brought me all the guts for an EBR build.

Now I have to scrub everything down to get all the preservative off and put this thing together.

I never saw so many tiny springs and plungers and detents and pivot pins!

This may take an hour or two. You guys hang in there and I'll put another pot of coffee on.

Are you allowed to build an EBR while wearing bib overhauls or can this only be done properly while wearing cargo shorts, a golf shirt w/logo and Rebock running shoes?

I'm not sure but if the coveralls are camo you're covered. (get it? coveralls...covered?)

And now that I have an EBR I am no longer a shooter, I am an "operator".

OK the EBR is assembled. Only needs a bit of tinkering, a good dose of 5-W30 synthetic oil and a couple of magazines.

I will fetch home a castle nut wrench and a couple of magazines tomorrow and we will get this thing zeroed Friday. It's too late and too hot to go to town right now.

The clock says two hours and nine minutes, which I suppose is not bad for a first time full assembly on an AR lower. I have never built one from the frame up. Never tore one down past the field strip phase.

People tell me the geniuses have made modifications and changed things so they are more reliable now. Don't know how that works with all AR parts still being interchangeable except for barrels ???

"Coatings" and special finishes they tell me.

Yea, right!

I guess it will not hurt to give this design another shot after 41 years.

I got to wait on the cable company this week. If that's what retirement is like, I'll keep working.

See how much smarter you are now that you have an AR. You're an operator with a castle nut. Shoot, you'll be hooking up a silencer next.

We are silent on the matter of silencers. Know how they do, and what they do, and what is inside of them, but the $200 for the tax stamp will buy 1k ammo, so I will just let my buds at the range pay the government and observe their S&G games. I hung around until one of them had to clean their silencer once and learned the absolute simplicity of the units used on .22lr. I suppose the same would work on my radically downloaded cast bullet .223 loads. But I am also sure they will not cycle my new toy.

No problem though. I have wiped out the raccoon population in my area and anything I have to shoot now can be done at full volume and everyone knows I am here anyway. Everyone up and down my road has a makeshift range in the back yard.

No congrats deserved yet, I still have to find out if this thing really works.
