My first two knives, WIP
Hi, I'm new around here. I live in Oregon. Love the site!
Anyway, I've been working on these babies the last couple of days. Both are O1 steel. Cut and shaped with hand tools. My hands are sore! Arthritis is not fair!
The top one I will outfit with plumwood scales. I have a couple of pieces that I've been saving since I was a kid, it was from a tree that grew in my best friend's back yard. The pieces are under the knives.
The second one I'm still undecided.

Arthritis is why I finally got a band saw and a 2x72 grinder. It doesn't help the arthritis, at all, but it makes me feel better about it.
You're off to a great start. That plum will look great, though it looks like it's bound to curl. Be sure to seal it very well.

Welcome! Those are beautiful knives! The second one would look good with a light, almost white (the color of clean sand), in my opinion. Bone or antler would be good too. Good luck with whatever you choose!Originally Posted by NorthWind

Thanks for the welcome, and for the handle ideas. Zack. I'll keep it in mind. I've been thinking about making some micarta. I saw Crashdive's burlap Crashcarta and thought it looked awesome. Crash, if I may ask, did you use any coloring in the resin that you used on that one knife that's in the huckleberry thread? Gorgeous knife!
I've also seen the one with stabilized corncob - how interesting and cool! Anyway, I was noodling on that, and then thought of stabilized pinecone, before I even saw Randalss' knife using the emerald green stab pinecone! I immediately thought about great minds thinking alike. But that pinecone was also gorgeous! Can you give any tips on that, anywone (randalss?)? What kind of setup are you using to stabilize?

No dye in the resin. I either dye the material to the color I want, or (now in most cases) buy material the color I want.
