Bad Omen?

I had a funny thing happen to me today. I was at a store today and paid for my haul and received change. Something in the change caught my eye.

A penny was not the right colour, it was a rich chocolate brown, not the black brown that today's sorry excuse for pennies turn. I examined it, and noticed that that it had the old style of leaves on the front. I examined a bit closer (dang at 41 I just don't focus up close quite as easily as I used to) and noted that to my delight, it was a 1929! It is not worth much, but given all of the gloom-n-doom in the news I thought that it was perhaps symbolic of our current situation.

Is that a George V one cent piece?

I went to lunch a couple of years ago and received some pennies back. Same thing, one caught my eye. Turned out to be a wheat penny. "You have any more of these?" I asked. Turns out some guy had paid with two rolls of them. You kinda have to wonder where they came from (who's collection got knocked off) but both rolls are now in safe keeping.

That's one you can pass down to the kids.

In Canada, I think that it was 1937 when we changed to our current designs when George VI ascended.

Oddly enough, my wife found one a couple of years ago in her change as well. They will both be on display in a case with some 1928 bonds from a bank that went bust in the depression.

Of course, the US penny is a better find, as the design has not changed since 1909 (other than the wartime steelies), you really have to keep your eyes peeled to find older change.

Feeling alot better today. They put a permanent fibreglass cast on and removed the stitches today since the swelling is down.

I gotta stay off the Bloomberg channel in my truck..........

The US had a wheat (wheat ears) back until around 1958. That's when they added the Lincoln Memorial. I think they do another re-design on the penny next year (2009).

What's with the stitches? You didn't say anything about stitches.

I pick up a lot of wheat pennies at work,buy them out of the drawers,along with silver coins,and have even gotten a $1 silver note.

I heard they were completely doing away with the penny. Something about it costs more to make than it's worth. I do know that AAFES won't take them overseas, because it costs to much to try and ship the worthless little buggers back over here.

The guys that PCS'ed me didn't seem to know that when they packed my collection though. Otherwise I woulda cashed 'em in here first.

They are coming out with four new designs next year to commemorate the 100th year that Lincoln has been on the penny. All four designs come out in 2009.

I once got a 1938 English 6 pence in place of a US dime. Don't know if they still make them. Just thought it was a long time and distance from home and kept it!
