America's Pest Problem

Time Magazine (Dec. 9, 2013) has an article "America's Pest Problem: It's Time to Cull the Herd" by David Von Drehle. He seems to support limited hunting in suburban areas.

I saw that article. I would absolutely love to be able to set up a tree stand on any one of the estates in the swanky suburbs just outside Boston. I sometimes drive through just before dawn for an early work call in town and I have seen some of the most healthy, huge, well fed rats-with-antlers ever in some of those elite enclaves.

I live in SD (not really all that urban I know) but even in Sioux Falls it's not uncommon to see deer walking through peoples yards. I saw one walking through the Wal-Mart parking lot on night!

Sheesh. From the title, I thought we were talking about politicians. Anywhoooo....... You will never find fatter tree rats than we have running around the neighborhood. They raid every bird feeder.

I am returning to California (north of San Francisco) and see many deer near my father's house. I also saw a newspaper article about coyote thriving in San Francisco
I am waiting to see a report of grizzly bear on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley. Why not? Berkeley has every other species of creature Faiaoga (University of California, Berkeley, graduate)

When I did sprinkler work in San Antonio, there were a few of the high posh neighborhoods that had a pretty healthy population of white tail. You could get real close to them as well. I always wondered about using buck shot, safer than a rifle. Talking with the residents, half the people loved them, and fed them all the time, and the other half hated them, because they ate all their bushes. I am sure you guys wouldn't be surprised with the political demographics on who liked the deer and who didn't. It would be a good source of food for the homeless.

Here in Utah, I sometimes see Mulies walking through my neighborhood. But, I live less than a mile from the mountain, so it isn't surprising.

Another thing I was thinking about. When my grandpa died, my dad inherited his 22 revolver. He told me it was his cat gun. He said there wasn't a feral cat problem when he was a kid. You just shot feral cats in the streets.

Probly why ya don't hear much 'bout cats named Feral these days. Way too many Tom cats though.
