When I was young I had a friend with an enquiring mind. His father had many (original) black powder firearms. My friend, unaware you could still buy black powder, made up several batches of black powder using charcoal and saltpeter he collected from natural sources. The sulfur was purchased.

It worked about as well as you'd expect (kinda fizzeled - rather than exploded).

This was also the friend who climbed up on the boathouse at their lake cabin with a Civil War Enfield rifle and touched it off. Above the charge, he'd filled the barrel with fuel oil. The charge went off, spraying the fuel oil into a mist which ignited in a mighty explosion and blew out windows across the lake. He was lucky the end of the barrel was high above his head.

He was banned from going near the gun cabinet for one year.

You need salt peter, sulfur, and pure charcoal, all finely ground into powder. There are recipes on the web for the proportions. Mix them together, and generally you add a little water to make a paste. Mix well again, spread thin and let dry. Then when dry, grind up the clumps into a fine powder.

My high school chemistry teacher told us that saltpeter may cause sterility. I would just buy it...

That old saltpeter story was used in schools, colleges and boot camp. Some guys wouldn't eat the chow for a few days before going home. All in your head or I was immune. Old age works, saltpeter don't.

Go out and buy 'D' model Rocket Engine (you must be 18 to buy these, at least in CA). D model rocket engines are great because they carry a lot of propellant. E's are great too, but you may get strange looks at buying E rocket engines, if they even make them anymore. Model Rocket engines power are designated by the Alphabet, it goes A (the weakest) E (the strongest, and most propellant)

    From Wikipedia:
Rocket motors with power ratings higher than E, therefore, customarily use composite propellants made of ammonium perchlorate, potassium nitrate, aluminium powder, and a rubbery binder substance contained in a hard plastic case. This type of propellant is similar to that used in the solid rocket boosters of the space shuttle and is not as fragile as black powder, increasing motor reliability and resistance to fractures in the propellant. These motors range in impulse from size B to O. Composite motors produce more impulse per unit weight (specific impulse) than do black powder motors.

You are right Crash. I think my Editing of this post makes it more 'citizen friendly'.

I don't know if it's allowed or not. One of the mods will have to weigh in on it. I would not feel comfortable posting it. If some kid read my post, made one and something bad happened...... I've got no problem reading your post, so I just don't know. BTW - when you google pipe bom you get 411,000 hits plus it asks you if you meant bomb.
