We used to tape fluorescent lights to our CB antennas.

This show is so flawed it made me laugh. I watched the first episode but really lost interest after the first 10 minutes.
O.K. the power has been out for 15 years. You mean to tell me that in 15 years nobody figured out how to put the power back on??? What about hydroelectricity, wind generators and solar?
Why is everyone using black powder rifles? Nobody has modern firearms? Modern cartridges? Where did all the guns and ammo go? The militia couldn't have rounded up ALL the firearms; and if they did, why does only 1 man have a semi-auto pistol?
What happened to Government? Did the mass blackout kill off all forms of government and law enforcement?
How is it No automobiles are running? Pre-electronic ignition vehicles would still be good to go, especially older deisels. Or older points system cars and trucks.
Seriously? WTF? I don't understand how this show hasn't been cancelled yet.

I missed this. That can certainly be done. I know of guys that have buried a field full of wire directly underneath a cross country power line. I know a company that tracked down their power loss to a field full of wire. I know of some guys that nearly went to jail over that field full of wire. In the end, the cost of attorneys far outweighed the power savings.

Well Rick, the told me they could not hook me up to the juice because there were no lines running to my property. They sent me a letter saying such. I found the utility lines while digging for a project and decided since they were not there they had to be imaginary.

I ran the tubes off that imaginary power for a year while trying to convince the power company I really did have wires running up to my property. As soon as they allowed me pay for power I did so.

It is amazing that the government will not admit something eists even as they look at it. The enginering map said no power so there could not possibly be any power. They finally called one of their retired engineers in and found that the crews had run the line an extra 100 yards one afternoon rather than go back to HQ and get reassigned. They had never changed the work order.

It took me a full year to get the wires that "did not exist" turned on.

That was retreat #2. I learned to rig 12v, solar, gen power and even run the house off the truck battery.

As far as Revolution goes, I am enjoying it. Not for accuracy, not as a learning experience, just as entertainment. I think the debate preempted this week, did it not?

Wasn't faulting you. Just adding to the equation. But the power company isn't government. Just another private enterprise with lazy, forgetful employees that sometimes don't do their job well. Sorta like us.

As far as the tech questions I keep seeing arise, I think one has to remember that this isn't a typical EMP blackout presented in the show. It's a science-fiction blackout in which "heck, even BATTERIES stopped working"
To me this means that all those backup electricity sources simply couldn't work. Why electronic stagnation on that scale hasn't killed all life on the planet by interfereing with nervous-systems remains to be seen, but I'm sure some quantum physicist might be able to drum up a somewhat plausible theory.

Regardless of whether or not the blackout is realistic, I think the effects make some sense, most of the time. Part of the time. Well... some of the time.
If one suspends disbelief and just accepts the blackout as part of this universe (like The Force of Star Wars or any other such obviously fake but crucial plot point) then a lot of what is shown makes sense. If the government truly couldn't access any power AT ALL including batteries for flashlights and radios, then I find it quite plausible that pre-blackout governments might fall, considering how badly things were handled during Katrina. There was a period of time where it was almost like there simply wasn't a government at all in New Orleans. Now imagine if the government(s) was under that sort of pressure everywhere in the country (world) and to top it off they couldn't use vehicles, communicate, or even operate at night? Given 15 years, I don't doubt that could fall apart.

As for the question regarding antiquated weaponry, I think that makes sense too. Modern firearm ammunition would deplete far more rapidly than modern firearms. The reason the militia would use muzzle-loaders would be ease of making ammunition in a post-industrial world. Sure, for the first years you could reload, but making new brass of high-enough quality without modern equipment is a tough proposition. You might be able to make some crummy black-powder loads like those of the 19th century (remember, in this universe people would have forgotten how to make use of steam or water-powered mills to run loading machinery, so it would probably be sub-par for even the 1800s), but that means semi-autos simply couldn't feed the stuff, and at the high cost cartridges would have, it wouldn't make sense for anyone other than officers to have access to firearms that could rapidly deplete expensive resources.

But most importantly, it's not meant to be super accurate to real-life disasters. I think this show does a good job of holding most of its continuity with itself, but I wouldn't expect it to be directly parallel to real life, because the very premise behind it couldn't ever happen in real life in the way it does in-show. What I enjoy most about it is seeing the way people might behave when desperate. This is the same reason why I enjoy The Walking Dead even though its premise is even more absurd.
